1/144 Supermarine S6B

A few years ago, I was fortunate enough to be able to purchase a De Havilland Swallow prototype on eBay.

After the purchase, the seller contacted me to ask if I might be interested in other similar models—pieces that had resulted from experiments he and an associate had conducted in the field of 1/144-scale diecast aircraft, though they did not pursue the project further (see here : https://144airbattle.blogspot.com/2013/09/1144-avions-de-course-1144-racing.html)

And of course, I bought the models on offer and assembled most of them...

But one is missing, and the most important one (in my opinion...).

The definitive evolution of the Supermarine S.4, S.5 and S.6 (the latter two having won the Schneider Trophy in 1927 and 1929 respectively), all created by R.J. Mitchell, father of the Spitfire, the S6B No. S1595 won the Schneider Trophy in 1931, allowing Great Britain to keep the trophy permanently.

A few days later, the second S6B, the S1596, broke the world speed record by reaching 655,67 km/h.

So, it was unthinkable that I wouldn't tackle the construction of this mythical aircraft (seaplane to be more precise...).

Except that... the kit presented some predictable difficulties : absence of any anchor point for the float masts, but above all these were particularly flexible (as seen in the photo below) and therefore risked not supporting the weight of the fuselage and wings and thus, collapsing.

So, it took a lot of thought... but I eventually created a jig to bend the masts at the correct angle, and reinforced them with ultra-thin plastic sheet to prevent them from bending.

And as often happens, the assembly went quite smoothly... even though I did break a mast that had to be glued back together.

As for the painting, the only difficulty was the masking, which was tedious.

Before introducing the model, just a quick note: the original S6B number S1595, winner of the Schneider Trophy, has remained in its original, as-raced condition, at the Science Museum in London ever since that famous race.

So, if you happen to be in the area, be sure to take a look. It’s magnificent.
