1/144 Breguet 14

A few years ago, I presented a Breguet XIV in the French Army’s military livery.

And ever since, I’ve wanted to make another one, this time in the colours of a private company that used a great many Breguet 14s, but this time to deliver mail...

It should be noted that during the war, this aircraft was known as the Breguet XIV, but was renamed the Breguet 14 for civilian use after 1918.

The Breguet 14, of which more than 8,000 were built from 1917 onwards, was widely available after the war to many countries, as well as for emerging civilian activities such as airmail delivery.

From the 1920s onwards, the Société des lignes Latécoère, which later became the Compagnie Générale Aéropostale, better known as Aéropostale, established an airmail service from France to Senegal, via Spain and then Morocco, a route later extended to South America, notably including a link to Chile after crossing the Andes.

This postal service enjoyed a degree of success, as evidenced by the fleet of Breguet 14 aircraft operated by Lignes Aériennes Latécoère at Toulouse Airport (South of France) in the 1920s, a success that was further enhanced by some of the Aéropostale pilots, such as Jean Mermoz and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.

Later, the company will also carry passengers on the South American route.

The model shown here is from a Mamoli kit – a manufacturer of metal model kits that no longer exists – with a few parts from Reviresco’s metal kits as well.

Whilst the assembly and painting went smoothly, the most challenging part was applying the decals, particularly certain inscriptions, such as the name ‘Latécoère’ on the fin, which had to be applied letter by letter.

Here, at last, is a model depicting the adventures of these ‘aviator postmen’, whose motto was ‘mail first’ – sometimes at the cost of their own lives.

1/144 De Havilland DH.114 Heron (Part 2 and End)

After removing the masking tape from the top of the fuselage, the metallic grey paint looks pretty good, and most importantly, there are no smudges on the white.

Then comes the decal stage. And here, there's a slight problem...

The fuselage strip with the windows is topped by a grey line, which is also found at the end of the line, which falls right on the horizontal tail fin...

And then it was time to ‘play with the scalpel’.

Luckily, the Classic-Airlines sheet is of good quality.

Luckily too that I had the original F-Rsin board to salvage a piece of the access door, cut out with the grey fuselage strip, and for the rear cargo door forgotten by Classic Airlines (which can be clearly seen in the photo below on the right).

The rest of the decals were applied without any particular problems, as was the painting of the final details: exhaust pipes, propellers, etc.

And so here it is, in 1/144 scale, the De Havilland DH.144 in its Mk.1B version, i.e. with fixed landing gear, in the colours of Morton Air Services, one of the first British private airlines founded in 1945.

I have wanted to build the De Havilland Heron for years.
Probably because of the Airfix box art...

Okay, this drawing isn't as fierce or warlike as some of Roy Cross's.
But it made me dream, just like the others.

Even this small aircraft, rustic for ‘minimalist’ airfields, has a certain charm.

So, as soon as I could, I bought the F-RSIN resin model to cast it in metal.

However, I had to try several times to produce a decent wing, and even the last version wasn't the most beautiful, because eventually although the length and width were fine, the surface was covered with small holes, as if the wing had had smallpox...

It could be insufficient heating of the metal or mold...

So, we had to fill it all in with putty, sand it down, put more putty on, sand it down again, and so on.
That's the part I hate the most....

Then, the rest of the assembly: the horizontal fins and landing gear, for which I had to fill in the hatches because I decided to make the Heron 1 version, with fixed landing gear.
More putty...!

Then paint the top of the fuselage and tail white....

I hate white (as well as red and yellow), but I have (finally) found a great technique : once the primer has been applied (either white or gray), I apply a coat of Tamya Insignia White spray paint, which has the advantage of “painting,” then one (or two, depending on the case) coat of white paint, which “gives the color.”

I use the same primer and Insignia White technique before applying yellow or red.

On verra si ça marche...

Et donc, la première couche de gris.

And before masking the white to apply the metallic gray, I put on a coat of varnish to protect it when it's time to remove the masking tape.

We'll see if it works....

And so, the first layer of gray.

Photos of different aircraft of the same model, within the same company, at different times, show a variety of shades of gray on the fuselage and wings.

So I opted for a mixture of gray with a slight aluminum tint, sprayed on lightly and almost superficially (at least I hope so...).

A suivre donc.

All that remains is to wait for the result after complete drying, removing the white mask, applying the decals, and adding other final small details.

To be continued.

1/144 Douglas C-54 (DC-4) Skymaster

It must be about ten years since I first thought of building this aeroplane in the colours of the Civil Air Transport airline.

So it's been about ten years since I bought the Minicraft decal sheet for this aeroplane in the colours of that airline.

1/144 Douglas C-54 (DC-4) Skymaster diecast metal aircraft miniature

Except that, as is often the case, I bought this sheet without thinking, and it's only after the purchase I realised that it was intended for a Douglas DC-6 and not a DC-4 which I had planned to build (especially since only the DC-4 was available from finished model manufacturers such as Altaya-Ixo).

And given the size, I couldn't imagine trying to cast it myself in metal...

You can better understand how long it took me to start this model and, in particular, to adapt the decals from the DC-6 to the DC-4....

So why this ‘whim’ of wanting to do only this livery for CAT, Civil Air Transport...?

On the one hand, this livery is highly original with its golden dragon on the fuselage, and on the other hand, CAT is an aviation company created by Claire Lee Chennault, commander of the Flying Tigers, the squadron of American volunteers who intervened in China to fight the Japanese before Pearl Harbour.

But also, and above all... after taking refuge in Taiwan following the defeat of Chiang Kai-shek's forces in mainland China, CAT encountered financial difficulties and was taken over by the CIA to carry out secret missions throughout Southeast Asia, in addition to passenger flights.

A few years later, CAT became Air America, a much more famous company, still owned by the CIA.

1/144 Douglas C-54 (DC-4) Skymaster diecast metal aircraft miniature

The most noticeable differences between a DC-6 and a DC-4 are the length of the aircraft and shape of the windows : square for the 6 and oval for the 4.

So, first I had to use scissors to adapt the fuselage strips to the shorter length of the DC-4...

Secondly, it was necessary to repaint this strip, first to mask the square windows and secondly because the colour of the decal was a little too pink compared to photos of the real aircraft...
And repaint without going over the lines, gold at the top and black and red at the bottom, of the fuselage strip.

Finally, apply decals from another DC-4 sheet with oval windows, doors, etc., then redo the registration numbers, which are much larger on and under the wings compared to the DC-6 and the Minicraft decal sheet.

One last thing: I chose not to make the livery immaculate, firstly to take into account weather conditions in South-East Asia and secondly, because CAT aircraft, at least in the beginning, came from military surplus, such as this DC-4, which was actually a C-54 Skymaster.

And so, after ten years, then the tension of painting the fuselage stripes and applying the ‘old’ decals that were barely broken..., here is a DC-4 in the colours of Civil Air Transport, the predecessor of Air America.

1/144 Nakajima Ki-11

In the 1930s, the Japanese military was looking for an aircraft to equip both the Japanese army and navy.

Kawasaki, Mitsubishi, and Nakajima proposed the first, a biplane called the Ki-10, the second, the Ki-14 monoplane (actually a land-based version of the Navy's A5M fighter), and the third, also a monoplane, the Ki-11.

The Nakajima Ki-11 closely resembled the American Boeing P-26 Peashooter fighter, but lacked the latter's strengths, as it suffered from constant instability and a fragile streamlined landing gear.

Ultimately, the Kawasaki Ki-10 emerged victorious in the competition, securing a production order for this biplane.

Despite its rejection by the military authorities, the Nakajima Ki-11 led to the "creation" of the Ki-27 "Nate" fighter.

One of the four Nakajima Ki-11 prototypes was sold to the Asahi Shinbun newspaper and used until 1943 for liaison missions, rapid mail transport, as well as reconnaissance and intelligence gathering flights.

This is the livery I chose after casting the metal model based on the A&W resin kit (sold on the new Anigrand website) and using leftover decals from MYK Design Decals.

In the 1930s, the aircraft manufacturer De Havilland developed the DH.84 Dragon into the four-engine DH.86 and the short-haul twin-engine DH.89 with a capacity of 6 to 8 passengers the DH.89, which enjoyed some success in its civilian version, Dragon Rapide, as well as the military version called Dominie.

The model was cast in metal from the kit of the manufacturer Air-Craft Models (or its predecessor Aeroclub since I cast the model in 2015....) and whose only assembly problem was for the struts (in photo-etched) that I made the mistake of placing after having fixed the upper wing on the fuselage, imagining that it would be easier.....

For the livery, I chose that of the manufacturer Arctic Decals which notably offers that of Railway Air Services, an airline created by four railway companies and Imperial Airways to supplement distant services such as the most important line between London and Scotland (London-Birmingham-Manchester/Liverpool-Belfast-Glasgow).

1/144 Heinkel He 70 "Blitz" - Part 2

Here is the continuation (and end) of the presentation of this Heinkel He 70.

While the biggest challenge was assembling the landing gear, which had to be created from scratch, the overall painting, the application of the decals, and the subsequent black paint job were no problem.

So here is the Heinkel He 70 called "Sperber", which means Sparrowhawk, in the colors of Lufthansa.
