1/144 Vickers FB5 "Gunbus"

A partir de ses recherches débutées en 1912 sur un avion de guerre armé, la Société Vickers a conçu le FB5, biplan à hélice propulsive et armé d'une mitrailleuse Vickers (plus tard remplacée par une Lewis) dont le premier vol date de juillet 1914, le définissant ainsi comme le premier avion de chasse au monde car conçu spécialement pour le combat aérien.

Après des débuts ratés (un premier appareil étant tombée entre les mains des Allemands...), le FB.5 a commencé à être utilisé par groupes de 2 ou 3, jusqu'à ce qu'il équipe entièrement le 11e Squadron du RFC, devenu le premier escadron de chasse.

Mais relativement lent et commençant à être surclassé notamment par le Fokker E.III Eindecker, le FB.5 a été retiré des premières lignes en 1916 et affecté à l'entrainement.

Ce FB.5 au 1/144 est un modèle d'impression 3D en métal trouvé à l'époque auprès de Shapeways (avec l'Albatros W.4 - voir ici et là).

Le seul travail a consisté à poncer le modèle pour essayer de supprimer le côté granuleux lié à l'impression 3D, mais qui sont particulièrement dures.

Mais comme pour l'Albatros, la seule solution a été de mastiquer et de peindre "généreusement" le modèle.

Donc, en l'absence de tout montage, le seul travail a été le mastiquage et la peinture pour réaliser ce FB.5 de deuxième production, reconnaissable à l'empennage plus grand.

Based on research that began in 1912 on an armed military aircraft, Vickers designed the FB5, a propeller-driven biplane armed with a Vickers machine gun (later replaced by a Lewis), which made its maiden flight in July 1914, thus establishing it as the world’s first fighter aircraft, as it was specifically designed for aerial combat.

After a failed start (the first aircraft had fallen into German hands...), the FB.5 began to be deployed in groups of two or three, until it eventually became the sole aircraft type in the 11th Squadron of the RFC, which went on to become the first fighter squadron.

However, because it was relatively slow and was beginning to be outclassed, particularly by the Fokker E.III Eindecker, the FB.5 was withdrawn from the front lines in 1916 and reassigned to training duties.

This 1/144-scale FB.5 is a 3D-printed metal model that I found back then on Shapeways (along with the Albatros W.4—see here and there).

The only work involved sanding the model to try to remove the grainy texture typical of 3D printing, but those areas were particularly tough.

But as with the Albatros, the only solution was to apply putty and paint the model “generously.”

So, since no assembly was required, the only work involved was filling and painting to create this second-production FB.5, recognizable by its larger tail section.

1/144 CAC CA-13 Boomerang

Au regard des difficultés d'approvisionnement d'avions militaires à partir de la Grande Bretagne pour assurer sa défense, l'Australie, par l'intermédiaire de l'entreprise CAC (Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation), a produit dans l'urgence l'avion de chasse Boomerang, conçu sur la base de l'avion d'entrainement Wirraway, lui même une émanation du North American T-6.

Handicapé par sa motorisation, le Boomerang n'a pas été un chasseur efficace mais a finalement trouvé sa place comme avion d'attaque au sol.

Même si on peut le considérer comme "secondaire", j'ai une certaine sympathie pour cet avion, sans doute à cause du boxart d'Airfix et qui présente son échappement ressemblant plus à un lance-flammes....

Faced with difficulties in sourcing military aircraft from Britain to safeguard its defence, Australia, through the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation (CAC), urgently produced the Boomerang fighter aircraft, which was based on the Wirraway trainer, itself a derivative of the North American T-6.

Held back by its engine, the Boomerang was not an effective fighter but eventually found its niche as a ground-attack aircraft.

Even though it might be considered ‘secondary’, I have a certain fondness for this aircraft, no doubt because of the Airfix box art, which depicts its exhaust pipe looks like a flamethrower....

Ce modèle a été coulé en métal sur la base d'un kit en résine de Kami de Koro Koro, dont la difficulté principale, comme souvent, tient à la verrière, trop grande....

Les décalques proviennent du fabricant australien Novascale et se posent sans problème, à condition de revernir en brillant la planche avant de les poser.

Et voici donc, après la série des biplans, un CAC Boomerang CA.13 en métal au 1/144.

This model was cast in metal based on a resin kit of the Kami de Koro Koro, the main difficulty with which, as is often the case, lies in the canopy, which is too large....

The decals are made by the Australian manufacturer Novascale and are easy to apply, provided you give the panel a gloss finish before applying them.

And so, following on from the biplane series, here is a 1/144 scale metal CAC Boomerang CA.13.

1/144 Breguet 14

Il y a quelques années, j'ai présenté un Breguet XIV dans une livrée militaire de l'Armée Française.

Et depuis, j'ai eu envie d'en faire un autre, cette fois aux couleurs d'une compagnie privée, qui a utilisé de très nombreux Breguet 14, mais cette fois pour apporter du courrier...

Il est à noter que pendant la guerre, la dénomination était de cet avion était le Breguet XIV, mais elle est devenue Breguet 14 pour son usage civil postérieurement à 1918.

Le Breguet 14, construit à plus de 8000 exemplaires à partir de 1917, a été disponible en nombre après la guerre pour de nombreux pays mais aussi pour des activités civiles naissantes, comme le transport de courrier par avion.

A partir des années 20, la Société des lignes Latécoère, devenue plus tard Compagnie Générale Aéropostale, plus connue sous le nom d'Aéropostale, a créé un service postal aérien à partir de la France jusqu'au Sénégal, en passant par l'Espagne puis le Maroc, ligne étendue plus tard jusqu'à l'Amérique du Sud, avec notamment une liaison jusqu'au Chili après avoir traversé la Cordillère des Andes.

Cette activité postale a connu un certain succès comme le montre la flotte d'avions Breguet 14 des Lignes Aériennes Latécoère sur l'aérodrome de Toulouse dans les années 1920, succès qui a été magnifié par certains des pilotes de l'Aéropostale comme Jean Mermoz ou Antoine de Saint Exupéry.

Plus tard, la société transportera aussi des passagers sur la ligne d'Amérique du Sud.

A few years ago, I presented a Breguet XIV in the French Army’s military livery.

And ever since, I’ve wanted to make another one, this time in the colours of a private company that used a great many Breguet 14s, but this time to deliver mail...

It should be noted that during the war, this aircraft was known as the Breguet XIV, but was renamed the Breguet 14 for civilian use after 1918.

The Breguet 14, of which more than 8,000 were built from 1917 onwards, was widely available after the war to many countries, as well as for emerging civilian activities such as airmail delivery.

From the 1920s onwards, the Société des lignes Latécoère, which later became the Compagnie Générale Aéropostale, better known as Aéropostale, established an airmail service from France to Senegal, via Spain and then Morocco, a route later extended to South America, notably including a link to Chile after crossing the Andes.

This postal service enjoyed a degree of success, as evidenced by the fleet of Breguet 14 aircraft operated by Lignes Aériennes Latécoère at Toulouse Airport (South of France) in the 1920s, a success that was further enhanced by some of the Aéropostale pilots, such as Jean Mermoz and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.

Later, the company will also carry passengers on the South American route.

Le modèle présenté ici provient d'un kit Mamoli, fabricant de kits en métal aujourd'hui disparu, avec quelques pièces des kits aussi en métal de Reviresco.

Si le montage et la peinture se sont déroulés sans difficultés, le plus compliqué a été la pose des décalques, en particulier certaines inscriptions, comme le nom Latécoère sur la dérive, qui a du être posé lettre par lettre....

Voici enfin ce modèle représentant l'aventure de ces "postiers aviateurs" dont une des devises était "le courrier d'abord", parfois au mépris de leur vie.

The model shown here is from a Mamoli kit – a manufacturer of metal model kits that no longer exists – with a few parts from Reviresco’s metal kits as well.

Whilst the assembly and painting went smoothly, the most challenging part was applying the decals, particularly certain inscriptions, such as the name ‘Latécoère’ on the fin, which had to be applied letter by letter.

Here, at last, is a model depicting the adventures of these ‘aviator postmen’, whose motto was ‘mail first’ – sometimes at the cost of their own lives.

1/144 Fokker D.VII

J'ai l'impression qu'en ce moment, je suis en train de vider le "placard de la honte" de tous les modèles commencés et abandonnés à des stades de montage différents, et qui viennent d'être présentés dernièrement une fois enfin terminés : comme le Short 184 (voir ici), le Gloster Gladiator (voir là) ou encore le DFW Floh (voir ici).

C'est aussi le cas pour ce Fokker D.VII.

J'avais déjà monté 2 D.VII, il y a quelques années déjà (dont le bleu marine et rouge faisait partie des premiers kits que j'ai faits) mais..., j'ai toujours eu envie d'en faire un troisième...

Ce n'était pas seulement parce que c'est un bel avion, mais surtout que dans le cadre de la frénésie qui m'habitait à l'époque, où je stockais tout le matériel au 1/144 que je trouvais, j'avais acheté une planche de décals auprès d'un fabriquant amateur.

Il a fallu du temps pour que je me décide à attaquer la construction de ce kit composé comme d'habitude d'un mélange des kits en métal Reviresco et Skytrex, ce que j'ai fait en 2022 (date de la photo ci-dessous) avec notamment la peinture grise pour intégrer la décalque autour des personnages qui était d'un gris différent.

I feel like I'm currently emptying the ‘shame closet’ of all the models I started and abandoned at different stages of assembly, which have recently been presented now that they are finally finished: such as the Short 184 (see here), the Gloster Gladiator (see there) and the DFW Floh (see here).

This is also the case for this Fokker D.VII.

I had already built two D.VIIs a few years ago (the navy blue and red one was one of the first kits I ever built), but... I always wanted to build a third one...

It wasn't just because it's a beautiful aircraft, but mainly due to the frenzy that gripped me at the time, when I was stockpiling all the 1/144 scale material I could find, I had bought a sheet of decals from an amateur manufacturer.

It took me a while to decide to tackle the construction of this kit, which, as usual, consists of a mixture of Reviresco and Skytrex metal kit, which I did in 2022 (date of the photo below), notably painting it grey to blend in the decal around the characters, which was a different shade of grey.

Et puis, je n'ai rien fait pendant 3 ans, jusqu'à ces derniers jours où j'ai décidé de faire du vide dans le "placard de la honte"....

J'ai donc repris le montage de ce biplan, avec la difficulté liée à la pose des décalques en losange spécifique des avions allemands à la fin de la 1e Guerre Mondiale, et provenant d'un kit Valom.

Mais si ces décalques sont légèrement surdimensionnées et permettent de faire le tour des bords des ailes, elles sont difficiles à coller, et assez cassantes surtout avec le Micro Sol, sans parler de leur fragilité lors des manipulations du modèle pendant le montage.

Un petit mot sur cette décoration : L'avion du pilote allemand Alfred Bäder (deux victoires) porte sur chaque côté du fuselage un dessin tiré d’un vieux conte médiéval intitulé "Die Sieben Schwaben" (Les Sept Souabes), qui raconte plusieurs aventures de sept habitants du Duché de Souabe (sujet habituel de moqueries) dont une objet de cette décoration, à savoir la rencontre avec un lièvre qu'ils prennent pour un monstre (sur un côté) et le font courageusement fuir avec une longue lance (de l'autre côté)....

And then, I did nothing for three years, until recently when I decided to clear out the “cupboard of shame”...

So I resumed assembling this biplane, with the difficulty of applying the diamond-shaped decals specific to German aircraft at the end of the First World War, and from a Valom kit.

But if these decals are slightly oversized and wrap around the edges of the wings, they are difficult to apply and quite brittle, especially with Micro Sol, not to mention their fragility when handling the model during assembly.

A quick note about this decoration : German pilot Alfred Bäder's aeroplane (two victories) has a drawing on each side of the fuselage taken from an old medieval tale entitled ‘Die Sieben Schwaben’ (The Seven Swabians), which recounts several adventures of seven inhabitants of the Duchy of Swabia (a subject of frequent ridicule), including one subject of this decoration, namely including their encounter with a hare that they mistake for a monster (on one side) and bravely chase away with a long spear (on the other side)....

Et voici donc après plusieurs années de pause, un Fokker D.VII avec cette décoration si particulière des 7 Souabes (désolé, mais à cause des mats et de l'ombre de l'aile supérieure, on ne voit pas le lièvre).

And so, after several years' break, here is a Fokker D.VII with the distinctive livery of the 7 Swabians (sorry, but because of the poles and the shadow cast by the upper wing, we cannot see the hare).

1/144 DFW T.28 Floh

Embauché au sein de l'entreprise DFW (Deutsche Flugzeug-Werke), l'ingénieur touche à tout Hermann Dorner a conçu un avion de chasse de petite taille, profilé pour optimiser l'aérodynamisme afin de surpasser les avions Eindecker dont la vitesse maximale était de 140 km/h.

Cet appareil principalement axé sur la vitesse et équipé d'un moteur Mercedes de 100 ch entièrement intégré au fuselage, semblant sortir d'un dessin animé, a été nommé Floh, soit "puce" par son concepteur...

Malgré son aspect surprenant, en février 1916, le T.28 Floh a été le premier avion au monde à atteindre la vitesse de 180 km/h en vol horizontal.

Mais les choix de conception pour améliorer la vitesse ont eu des conséquences négatives : Le profil haut de l'avion, l'emplacement de l'aile supérieure et la position du pilote limitaient la visibilité vers l'avant et vers le bas, en particulier lors du décollage ou de l'atterrissage, lors duquel l'avion a été endommagé lors du premier vol.

On voit bien sur la photo ci-dessous l'absence de visibilité du pilote au regard de sa position derrière l'aile supérieure, placée plus haut.

Peu après, le Floh s'est écrasé lors d'un autre vol d'essai, blessant gravement son pilote, et détruisant totalement l'avion qui n'a pas été reconstruit.

Hired by DFW (Deutsche Flugzeug-Werke), the versatile engineer Hermann Dorner designed a small fighter plane with a streamlined profile to optimise aerodynamics and outperform Eindecker planes, which had a maximum speed of 140 km/h.

This aircraft, designed primarily for speed and equipped with a 100 hp Mercedes engine fully integrated into the fuselage, looks like something out of a cartoon. Its designer named it Floh, meaning ‘flea’.

Despite its surprising appearance, in February 1916, the T.28 Floh was the first aircraft in the world to reach a speed of 180 km/h in horizontal flight.

However, the design choices made to improve speed had negative consequences : the aircraft's high profile, the location of the upper wing and the position of the pilot limited forward and downward visibility, particularly during take-off and landing, during which the aircraft was damaged on its maiden flight.

The photo below clearly shows the pilot's lack of visibility due to his position behind the upper wing, which was placed higher up.

Shortly afterwards, the Floh crashed during another test flight, seriously injuring its pilot and completely destroying the aircraft, which was not rebuilt.

Le modèle présenté a été coulé en métal sur la base d'un kit en impression 3D du fabricant japonais V1 Models, particulièrement bien conçu notamment pour la pose des mats entre les ailes.

Les deux "difficultés" ont été, la première de trouver un gris très léger, à la limite du blanc mais sans l'être, et la seconde, de réaliser les bordures noires sur les ailes et ailerons, en gardant un trait fin et régulier.

J'ai finalement réussi à faire ces bordures noires grâce à un feutre de peinture, mais quand même après quelques sueurs froides....

Voici donc au 1/144, ce très curieux petit appareil qui non seulement a volé, mais a été le plus rapide de son époque...

Une dernière chose : j'ai choisi de placer l'hélice dans une position horizontale, pour mieux profiter de l'avant de cet avion.....

The model shown was cast in metal based on a 3D-printed kit from Japanese manufacturer V1 Models, which is particularly well designed, especially for installing the masts between the wings.

The two ‘difficulties’ were, first, finding a very light grey, almost white but not quite, and second, creating the black borders on the wings and ailerons, keeping the lines fine and even.

I finally managed to make these black borders using a paint marker, but after a few cold sweats....

Here, then, in 1/144 scale, is this very curious little aircraft which not only flew, but was the fastest of its time...

One last thing : I chose to place the propeller in a horizontal position to make better use of the front of this aircraft...

1/144 DFW (Deutsche Flugzeug-Werke) T.28 Floh

1/144 Gloster Gladiator

C'est à l'été 2020 que j'ai coulé en métal le fuselage du Gloster Gladiator sur la base du kit en plastique de Mark1 Models, mais j'ai conservé les ailes du kit en métal de Reviresco qui elles, étaient conformes.

J'ai commencé à le monter dans la foulée et pour une raison que je n'explique pas, je l'ai laissé en plan une fois les mats placés mais juste avant de monter l'aile supérieure.

Jusqu'à ces derniers jours où, après avoir enfin posé les mats et l'aile supérieure du Short 184, je me suis dit que je pouvais continuer d'autres biplans dans la foulée....

Finalement, le montage s'est tellement bien déroulé que je me demande encore pourquoi je l'ai laissé à moitié fini tant de temps.

Le plus difficile a été la pose des boudins de Patafix pour faire le camouflage général.

It was in the summer of 2020 that I cast the fuselage of the Gloster Gladiator in metal, based on the plastic kit from Mark1 Models, but I kept the wings from the Reviresco metal kit, which were accurate.

I started assembling it straight away and, for some reason I can't explain, I left it unfinished once the masts were in place but just before assembling the upper wing.

Until these last few days, when, after finally installing the masts and upper wing of the Short 184, I decided that I could continue with other biplanes in the same vein....

Finally, the editing went so well that I still wonder why I left it half finished for so long.

The most difficult part was applying the Patafix strips to create the overall camouflage.

Parmi les 6 options de livrées proposées par Mark1 Models, j'ai choisi celle, très connue, des volontaires suédois de la Flygflottilj 19 (Flottille aérienne 19) auprès de la Force Aérienne finlandaise pendant la Guerre d'Hiver contre les Soviétiques.

Et plus précisément, la livrée portée à la fin de cette guerre lorsque ces volontaires sont rentrés en Suède avec leurs avions, portant des décorations particulières à la place des cocardes finlandaises supprimées.

Et donc, après plusieurs années d'oubli dans un tiroir, voici un Gloster Gladiator au 1/144 enfin terminé.

Of the six livery options offered by Mark1 Models, I chose the well-known one worn by the Swedish volunteers of Flygflottilj 19 (Flight Regiment 19) with the Finnish Air Force during the Winter War against the Soviets.

More specifically, the livery worn at the end of the war when these volunteers returned to Sweden with their aircraft, bearing special decorations in place of the Finnish cockades that had been removed.

And so, after several years forgotten in a drawer, here is a 1/144 scale Gloster Gladiator, finally completed..

1/144 Short 184 (Part 2 and End)

Après les difficultés rappelées précédemment (voir ici) à cause des erreurs du kit en résine Skytrex, le montage s'est déroulé relativement facilement sauf une "pause" de plusieurs années pendant lesquelles le modèle est resté à moitié monté.

Pour la livrée, j'ai choisi, sur la base du fascicule de Windsock Datafile, le Short 184 portant le numéro 842, c'est à dire le second avion de série qui a la particularité d'être aussi le premier avion à avoir torpillé un navire.

Après avoir rejoint dans les Dardanelles le HMS Ben-My-Chree, un paquebot britannique transformé en porte-hydravions, ce Short 184 piloté par le Flight Commander Edmonds a torpillé un navire turc le 12 Août 1915, mais ce torpillage ne lui a pas été crédité car ce navire avait déjà été frappé par le sous-marin britannique E-14.

Mais même si le résultat a été contesté, cela n'a rien enlevé au succès du principe du torpillage.

Surtout que, le 17 août suivant, avec le même hydravion n°842, le Flight Commander Edmonds a récidivé en torpillant un autre navire dans la Mer de Marmara, qui a été éventré.

Voici donc ce Short 184 au 1/144, avec la livrée portée au début de la 1e Guerre Mondiale, ainsi que les premières cocardes des aéronefs militaires britanniques.

After the difficulties mentioned previously (see here) due to errors in the Skytrex resin kit, assembly went relatively smoothly, except for a ‘break’ of several years during which the model remained half-assembled.

For the livery, I chose, based on the Windsock Datafile booklet, the Short 184 bearing the number 842, i.e. the second production aircraft, which also has the distinction of being the first aircraft to have torpedoed a ship.

After joining HMS Ben-My-Chree, a British packet steamer converted into a seaplane carrier, in the Dardanelles, this Short 184 piloted by Flight Commander Edmonds torpedoed a Turkish ship on 12 August 1915, but this torpedoing was not credited to him because the ship had already been hit by the British submarine E-14.

But even though the result was disputed, this did not detract from the success of the torpedoing principle.

Especially since, on the following 17th of August, using the same seaplane No. 842, Flight Commander Edmonds did it again, this time torpedoing another ship in the Sea of Marmara, which was gutted.

Here is Short 184 in 1/144 scale, with the livery worn at the beginning of the First World War, as well as the first cockades of British military aircraft.
