Avec le kit du Snow Cruiser (
présenté ici), figurait aussi le Beechcraft Staggerwing, un avion construit à plus de 700 exemplaires entre 1933 et 1949, qui a la particularité d'avoir l'aile supérieure décalée vers l'arrière par rapport à l'aile inférieure.
S'il n'a jamais été monté sur le Snow Cruiser comme il est souvent faussement présenté, cet avion a néanmoins participé à la première expédition dans l'Antarctique avec le "monstre rouge".
The Snow Cruiser kit (
shown here) also included the Beechcraft Staggerwing, an aircraft built in over 700 examples between 1933 and 1949, distinguished by its upper wing being offset rearward relative to the lower wing.
While it was never fitted to the Snow Cruiser as is often mistakenly claimed, this aircraft did participate in the first Antarctic expedition with the "Red Monster."
Le coulage en métal de ce modèle s'est déroulé sans problème, mais les difficultés sont apparues après....
Tout d'abord, la peinture a été délicate à cause d'une part, du rouge et du jaune qui sont des peintures peu couvrantes et d'autre part, l'imbrication de ces deux couleurs.
Il a fallu jouer avec la bande de masquage et faire des retouches, un peu partout.
La seconde difficulté a concerné les mats des ailes, peints sur leur base de coulage en résine, très difficiles à détacher, ce qui a entraîné un peu de casse, un besoin de colle et quelques jurons bien sentis....
Le positionnement de ces mats a été aussi délicat, car il n'y a aucune notice ni marques d'un endroit quelconque pour les fixer.
Le troisième problème, celui-ci plus conséquent : les trains d'atterrissage.
Les pièces en résine du kit ont cassé et elles étaient tellement fines qu'il a été impossible de les recoller.
De toute manière, elles n'étaient pas du tout conformes au train d'atterrissage si particulier de cet avion (et je ne parle même pas des puits des trains d'atterrissage qu'il a fallu creuser dans l'aile inférieure, sans la moindre précision du fabricant du kit).
Il a fallu fouiller dans la boîte des pièces en surplus, pour trouver des espèces de fourche correspondant aux deux parties du train d'atterrissage et jouer avec du fil métallique souple super fin pour créer un ressort sur une des deux parties...
The metal casting of this model went smoothly, but the difficulties arose afterwards....
Firstly, the painting was tricky because, on the one hand, red and yellow are paints with poor coverage, and on the other hand, the interweaving of these two colors.
It was necessary to play around with the masking tape and make touch-ups, a little bit everywhere.
The second difficulty concerned the wing masts, painted on their resin casting base, which were very difficult to detach, resulting in some breakage, a need for glue and a few choice curses....
Positioning these masts was also tricky, as there are no instructions or markings indicating where to fix them.
The third problem, this one more significant : the landing gear.
The resin parts in the kit broke, and they were so thin that it was impossible to glue them back together.
In any case, they weren't at all compatible with the very specific landing gear of this aircraft (and I'm not even mentioning the landing gear wells that had to be cut into the lower wing, without the slightest instruction from the kit manufacturer).
It was necessary to rummage through the box of spare parts to find some kind of fork-like fittings corresponding to the two parts of the landing gear, and then use super-thin flexible wire to create a spring on one of the two parts...
Je vous rassure, les supports des amortisseurs seront coupés et affinés pour correspondre le plus possible à la taille de l'avion et l'échelle du modèle.
Je dois vous avouer que j'ai un peu triché car je n'ai fait que le train d'atterrissage "normal" c'est à dire destiné aux roues, alors que celui prévu pour les skis comportait un ensemble de tubes qu'il m'a semblé impossible à faire, à faire tenir, surtout avec le poids du modèle en métal.
D'autant qu'il n'y a aucune notice, et que les photos ne sont pas toujours très claires sur tous ces tuyaux....
Rest assured, the shock absorber mounts will be cut and refined to match the size of the aircraft and the scale of the model as closely as possible.
I must confess that I cheated a little because I only made the "normal" landing gear, that is to say, intended for the wheels, whereas the one intended for the skis included a set of tubes that seemed impossible to make, to hold together, especially with the weight of the metal model.
Especially since there are no instructions, and the photos aren't always very clear on all these pipes....
Sur cette autre photo, qui montre encore la complexité des trains d'atterrissage pour skis, il m'a semblé que les skis étaient jaune-orangé comme les ailes de l'avion, et non pas rouge comme souvent présenté.
Mais bon, comme il n'y a pas plus de notice concernant les couleurs...., c'est le même jaune que pour les ailes que j'ai finalement choisi.
In this other photo, which again shows the complexity of ski landing gear, it seemed to me that the skis were yellow-orange like the wings of the plane, and not red as often presented.
But anyway, since there are no further instructions regarding the colors..., it's the same yellow as for the wings that I finally chose.
Le quatrième problème a concerné les décalques.
Curieusement, celles-ci sont de bonne qualité, ne se cassent pas ni s'enroulent et la pose des décalques s'est donc déroulé sans problèmes.
La difficulté a concerné la couleur de certaines : immatriculation des ailes proposée en rouge et immatriculation de la dérive, fournie en noir.
La photo ci-dessous :
- concernant les immatriculations sur les ailes, semble démontrer qu'elle est en rouge sur le fond peint jaune-orangé, mais je me méfie de ces photos "colorisées" où, comme l'avion est rouge, cette couleur se retrouve presque partout....
- concernant la dérive, l'immatriculation semble claire, non pas blanche comme le nom du constructeur en haut de la dérive, mais plutôt jaune ou grise ou quelque chose comme ça...
J'ai donc choisi, pour les ailes, une immatriculation en noir (qui m'a semblé plus crédible pour être plus visible sur le jaune-orangé) et pour la dérive, comme la marque Beechcraft est fournie en noir, j'ai conservé l'immatriculation en noir fournie par le fabricant du modèle pour une question d'homogéneité.....
The fourth problem concerned the decals.
Surprisingly, these are of good quality, they do not break or tangle and the application of the decals therefore went without any problems.
The difficulty concerned the colour of some : wing registration proposed in red and tail registration provided in black.
The photo below :
- regarding the wing markings, seems to show that they are red on a yellow-orange background, but I'm wary of these "colorized" photos where, because the aircraft is red, this color appears almost everywhere...
- regarding the tail fin, the marking seems clear, not white like the manufacturer's name at the top of the fin, but rather yellow or gray or something like that...
So, for the wings, I chose a black registration (which seemed more credible to be more visible against the yellow-orange) and for the tail, as the Beechcraft brand is supplied in black, I kept the black registration supplied by the model manufacturer for the sake of consistency.....
Enfin, cela a été la pose des skis et celle des ailerons horizontaux, qui ne sont pas tout à fait symétriques et assez fragiles car simplement collés sur le fuselage sans le moindre tenon ou autre système de fixation.
Finally, there was the fitting of the skis and the horizontal stabilizers, which are not quite symmetrical and rather fragile because they are simply glued onto the fuselage without any tenon or other fastening system.

Ce modèle a été particulièrement difficile en l'absence de toutes informations sur le montage, la peinture, les endroits où fixer les accessoires, où réaliser les vitres du cockpit ou la porte d'accès, et je dois avouer qu'à la fin j'en avais tellement marre que je me suis dit que si ça cassait ou n'allait pas comme voulu, j'arrêterai avec ce modèle, quitte à le jeter.....
Bon, et le résultat ?

This model was particularly difficult due to the lack of any information on assembly, painting, where to attach accessories, where to make the cockpit windows or the access door, and I must admit that in the end I was so fed up that I told myself that if it broke or didn't go as planned, I would stop with this model, even if it meant throwing it away.....
