La quête de l'Austin Tilly - The quest of the Austin Tilly

J'ai raconté de manière succincte (voir ici), la genèse des véhicules "10 utility trucks" ou "Tilly" et de leurs 4 fabricants : Morris, Hillman, Standard et Austin (le plus connu), réalisés à partir d'un véhicule civil, l'Austin Ten Saloon.

I have told succinctly (see here), the genesis of the vehicles "10 utility trucks" or "Tilly" and their 4 manufacturer s: Morris, Hillman, Standard and Austin (the most famous), made from a civilian vehicle, the Austin Ten Saloon.

Depuis cet article de 2013, d'autres fabricants ont produit des "Austin Tilly (pour reprendre le terme générique) soit au 1/144 soit à l'échelle N Gauge : Arrowhead Miniatures, Diverse Images (mais sur un diorama), Oxford et un dernier fabricant de véhicules au N Gauge découvert cet été : Mr Parker.

Alors, une petite comparaison ?

Since this 2013 article, other manufacturers have produced "Austin Tilly (to use the generic term) either at 1/144 or N Gauge scale: Arrowhead Miniatures, Diverse Images (but on a diorama), Oxford and a last vehicle manufacturer at N Gauge discovered this summer: Mr Parker.

So, a little comparison ?

Comme d'habitude, aucun....

Dans le tableau ci-dessus, j'ai souligné les mesures qui sont les plus proches de celle du modèle théorique au 1/144.

Si les modèles Oxford et Parker sont "bons" pour la longueur, ce sont les modèles Diverse Images et Arrowhead qui sont "bons" pour la largeur.

Pour la hauteur c'est le modèle Diverse Images qui est le plus proche, avec un bémol concernant le modèle Arrowhead, car j'y ai juste installé les supports de la capote et pas celle-ci (les montants sont peut être un peu trop bas ?).

Un autre bémol concerne la longueur des modèles Diverse Images et Arrowhead. 

Compte tenu de l'importance des pare-chocs avant et arrière, on peut arriver à "gratter" quelques micro-millimètres pour arriver à être plus ou moins conforme à la longueur réelle.

Enfin, l'ultime problème est que le modèle Diverse Images se trouvait sur un diorama avec je ne sais plus quel avion et est donc totalement indisponible.

Il ne reste que le modèle Arrowhead sous réserve de vérifier la hauteur avec la capote et réduire un peu les pare-chocs.

Donc, une dernière comparaison visuelle (le personnage au 1/144 a une hauteur de 1,80 m, base incluse).

And the winner is?

As usual, none....

In the table above, I have underlined the measurements which are closest to that of the theoretical model at 1/144.

While the Oxford and Parker models are "good" for length, the Diverse Images and Arrowhead models are "good" for width.

For the height it is the Diverse Images model which is the closest, with a downside concerning the Arrowhead model, because I just installed the supports of the soft top and not this one (the uprights are perhaps a little too low?).

Another downside is the length of the Diverse Images and Arrowhead models.

Considering the importance of the front and rear bumpers, we can manage to "scratch" a few micro-millimeters to arrive to be more or less in conformity with the real length.

Finally, the last problem is that the Diverse Images model was on a diorama with I do not remember which plane and is therefore totally unavailable.

Only the Arrowhead model remains, subject to checking the height with the soft top and reducing the bumpers a little.

So, a last visual comparison (the character at 1/144 has a height of 1.80 m, base included).

Au final, je vais peut être rester avec le modèle Arrowhead, quitte à en acheter un autre et le monter avec la capote arrière (et peut être décorer le modèle Diverse Images avec le camouflage utilisé à Malte, comme celui du modèle Oxford qui est vraiment superbe).

In the end, I may stay with the Arrowhead model, even if it means buying another one and building it with the rear soft top (and maybe decorating the Diverse Images model with the camouflage used in Malta, like that of the Oxford model which is really superb).

1/144 RAF Refuelling Service : Bedford QL Refueller & Aec Matador Tanker

Après le RAF Emergency Set au 1/144 (voir ici), qu'est ce que vous diriez si je vous présentais le groupe de véhicules du RAF Refuelling Set d'Airfix : un camion-citerne Aec Matador 6x6 et un Bedford QLD en version ravitailleur ?


After the RAF Emergency Set at 1/144 (see here), what would you say if I introduced you the group of vehicles of the Airfix RAF Refuelling Set : an Aec Matador 6X6 Tanker and a Bedford QLD Refueller ?

Le Matador 6X6 Tanker a déjà été présenté (voir le précédent post), réalisé sur la base du modèle Oxford.

Le Bedford QLD Refuelling au 1/144 est réalisé à partir du kit en métal de Arrowhead Miniatures, pour lequel il a fallu créer des garde-boues, et ajouter une citerne en résine d’un autre fabricant dont j’ai oublié le nom (il a fallu réparer la citerne que j'ai endommagé en la désolidarisant de son véhicule d'origine…)

The Matador 6X6 Tanker has already been presented (see previous post), based on the Oxford model.

The Bedford QLD Refuelling at 1/144 is made from the metal kit from Arrowhead Miniatures, for which it was necessary to create mudguards, and add a resin tank from another manufacturer whose I have forgotten the name (it was necessary to repair the tank that I damaged by separating it from its original vehicle...)

Pour ce Bedford QLD, j’ai choisi, comme pour le set Emergency et le Aec Matador, une livrée post seconde guerre mondiale, car je trouve qu’avec son toit jaune, ce véhicule est très chic.


For this Bedford QLD, I chose, like the Emergency Set and the Aec Matador, a livery post World War II, because I find that with its yellow roof, this vehicle is very chic.

1/144 AEC Matador Tanker

Pendant la seconde guerre mondiale, il était présent sur toutes les bases aériennes de l'Empire Britannique (ou presque), et il a ravitaillé tous les types d'avions (ou presque).

During the Second World War, it was present on all air bases of the British Empire (or almost), and it refueled all types of aircraft (or almost).

Il a même fait du ravitaillement en mer. Oui, c'est vrai...!!!

It even made refueling at sea. Yes, it's true...!!!

Après la guerre, il a continué à servir sous l'uniforme, et aussi sur des aéroports civils.

Well after the war, it continued to serve under the uniform, and also on civilian airports.

Vous l'avez reconnu ?
C'est le AEC Matador dans sa version tanker 6 roues.

Je ne pouvais pas avoir une collection d'avions, avec un nombre conséquent de britanniques, sans avoir un Matador dans sa version camion citerne pour les accompagner.

Donc, après une étude poussée sur les AEC Matador disponibles au 1/144 (voir ici), et après avoir choisi celui produit par Oxford, l'étape suivante a été de créer à partir de ce modèle 4 roues, un camion citerne Matador 6 roues tel que ceux utilisés par la RAF.
Il a donc fallu raccourcir le châssis pour accueillir 2 roues supplémentaires provenant d'un autre modèle Oxford, compléter les garde-boues, et implanter une citerne provenant d'un kit en résine de Gramodels.

You recognized it ?
It is the AEC Matador in its version 6 wheels tanker.
I could not have a collection of aircraft, with a substantial number of British, without having a Matador in its tanker truck version to accompany them.
So, after an extensive study of the AEC Matador available at 1/144 (see here), and after choosing the one produced by Oxford, the next step was to create from this 4 wheels model, a 6-wheeler Matador tanker truck such as those used by the RAF.
It was therefore necessary to shorten the frame to accommodate 2 additional wheels from another Oxford model, complete the mudguards, and to implant a tank coming from a Gramodels resin kit.

Puis, un peu de peinture, une échelle provenant de la "boîte à rabiot", et une cocarde de la RAF.
Et voici donc un AEC Matador citerne de la RAF au 1/144, dans les couleurs d'après guerre.
Il ne reste plus qu'à faire le Bedford QL pour avoir le Refuelling set d'Airfix au 1/144...
On peut rêver, non ?

Then, some paint, a ladder coming from the "bits and bobs box", and one RAF cockade.
And here is an AEC Matador Tanker of the RAF at 1/144, in the post-war colors.
It only remains to do the Bedford QL to have the Airfix Refuelling set at 1/144...
We can dream, right ?

La quête du Matador définitif - The quest of the ultimate Matador - Part 3

Vous l'avez constaté dans le précédent message, les modèles Prohobby et Minifigs (celui-ci supposé être du 12mm c'est à dire du 1/144) sont trop petits.
Vraiment trop petits.
Le modèle Arrowhead - Wargames South, le plus beau, tout metal, est hélas trop gros.
Il reste donc le modèle Oxford, annoncé comme étant au 1/148, qui est le plus proche du 1/144, comme le démontrent les mesures.


You noted in the previous message, the Prohobby and Minifigs models (this one supposed to be 12mm ie 1/144) are too small.
Really too small.
The Arrowhead -Wargames South model, the most beautiful, all metal, is unfortunately too big.
It therefore remains the Oxford model, as announced at 1/148, which is the closest to the 1/144, as demonstrated by the measures.

Empattement- Wheelbase :  2,67 cm  - Oxford = 2,67

Largeur - Width : 1,66 cm  - Oxford = 1,61

Hauteur - Height :  2,15 cm  - Oxford = 2,16


Mais, avant de me lancer dans des travaux pharaoniques sur le Matador d'Oxford, je veux être sur que c'est le bon.
Quelques vérifications supplémentaires s'imposent.

D'accord, c'est totalement empirique, mais ça donne une idée de la proportion.
Une dernière vérification : la réduction au 1/144 de la maquette Refueller Set de Airfix, comprenant un Matador.

Le personnage est à la même taille - The character is at the same size

Les pneus sont identiques ou très approchants - Tires are identical or very close

Vérification de l'empattement avec le canon-porté Deacon - Verification of the wheelbase with the cannon-carried Deacon

Bon, le choix est fait : ce sera le modèle Oxford.
Il ne me reste plus qu'à le démonter, modifier le châssis arrière pour le transformer en 6x6, et y ajouter une citerne...

Facile....

PS : Et vous croyez que c'est facile le boulot d'un collectionneur, pour trouver le bon modèle...?

Well, the choice is made: it will be the Oxford model.
It remains for me to disassemble, modify the rear frame to convert it into 6x6, and add a cistern...  
Easy ....

PS : And you think it's easy, the job of a collector, to find the right model...?

Trop de différences entre ces modèles de Matador.

Too many differences between these Matador models.

Pour savoir quel est le vrai Matador, celui au 1/144 ou le plus proche possible, un seul recours : le livre de Steve Richards, la Bible en la matière.

To know what is the true Matador, the one at 1/144 or as close as possible, only one recourse : the Steve Richards book, the Bible on the subject.

Hélas, pas de plan dans ce livre, mais des mesures très précises :

Longueur hors tout - Overall Length : 20 ft 9 1/2 in = 6 m 337 / 144 = 4,40 cm

Empattement- Wheelbase : 12 ft 7 1/2 in = 3 m 848 / 144 = 2,67 cm

Largeur - Width : 7ft 10 1/2 in = 2 m 40 / 144 = 1,66 cm

Hauteur - Height : 10 ft 2 in = 3 m 098 / 144 = 2,15 cm

Voie avant - Track front : 6 ft 3 1/8 in = 1 m 908 / 144 = 1,32 cm

Voie arrière - Track rear : 5 ft 10 ¾ in = 1 m 797 / 144 = 1,25 cm

Je n'utiliserai pas les 2 dernières mesures car trop aléatoires, non seulement du fait de la largeur des pneus, mais aussi de l’imprécision possible lors du montage de kits, ou du système de roues mobiles de Oxford.

Quelques essais infructueux avec une simple règle, car elle ne prend pas assez en compte les excroissances ou aspérités situées en hauteur (toit de la cabine par exemple).


I will not use the last 2 measures, too random, not only due to the tires width, but also the possible imprecision during the kits assembly, or mobile Oxford wheels system.

Some unsuccessful attempts with a simple ruler, because it does not take sufficient account of the growths or bumps located in height (cabin roof, for example).

Donc, le recours à la mesure ultime, avec un pied à coulisse.

Therefore, the use of the ultimate measurement with a vernier caliper.

Mais pourquoi tant de "prise de tête" sur le Matador ?
Parce que j'en veux un au 1/144 !

What it is certain, is that the ProHobby and Minifigs models are clearly too small.
Good, but before choosing one, few checks need to be done. The quest will continue.
But why so much "head lock" about Matador ?
Because I want one at 1/144 !
