1/144 Bedford QL

Il y a quelques années, j'avais monté un Bedford QL Refueller sur la base d'un véhicule en métal produit par Arrowhead Miniatures, sur lequel j'avais ajouté une citerne avec deux perches de ravitaillement en résine provenant d'un autre kit d'un autre fabricant dont j'ai oublié le nom (voir ici).

Mais la citerne de ce Refueller était assez basique, avec aucune possibilité de bouger les perches de ravitaillement.

A few years ago, I built a Bedford QL Refueller based on a metal vehicle produced by Arrowhead Miniatures, to which I added a tank with two booms in resin from another kit by another producer whose name I have forgotten (see here).

But the tank of this refueller was quite basic, with no possibility of moving the refueling poles.

Alors, quand Arrowhead a réalisé un Bedford QL Refueller entièrement en métal, avec une citerne beaucoup plus conforme et complète avec le système de pompage, je l'ai bien entendu acheté.

Juste une petite précision sur les Refuellers sur chassis Bedford : Je m'étais trompé lors de la présentation du premier modèle avec une photo d'un Refueller à 3 perches alors que le mien n'en avait que deux....

So when Arrowhead produced a fully metal Bedford QL Refueller, with a much more compliant tank and complete with pumping system, I of course bought it.

Just a small point about the Refuellers on Bedford chassis : I was wrong when I presented the first model with a photo of a Refueller with 3 booms whereas mine only had two....

En fait, à partir de la fin de la guerre, les citernes étaient équipées de 2 perches de ravitaillement, avant l'apparition plus tard, d'une troisième au milieu, souvent dédiée à l'huile moteur, mais finalement rarement utilisée et parfois même supprimée.

Mais les 2 types de Refueller ont été utilisés concomitamment par la RAF.

In fact, from the end of the war, the tanks were equipped with 2 refueling poles, before the later appearance of a third in the middle, often dedicated to engine oil, but ultimately rarely used and sometimes even removed.

But both types of Refueller were used by the RAF concurrently.

Le montage s'est déroulé sans problème, et la seule difficulté rencontrée a concerné une des perches qui était plus courte que la première et cassée à la jonction avec le tuyau.

The assembly went smoothly, and the only difficulty encountered concerned one of the poles which was shorter than the first and broken at the junction with the pipe.

Il a fallu refaire une perche en corde à piano, recoller les deux jonctions, l'ajout sur la partie mobile et la perche, et entre la perche et le tuyau....

It was necessary to remake a pole using piano wire, re-glue the two joints, add to the moving part and the pole, and between the pole and the pipe....

Et voici donc le Bedford QL Refueller, première version avec 2 perches, et le toit jaune apparu à la fin des années 40.

And here is the Bedford QL Refueller, the first version with 2 poles, and the yellow roof that appeared at the end of the 40s.

Et avec une (toute) petite mise en scène ? - And with a (very) small amount of staging?

Du coup, avec ce changement de citerne sur un précédent modèle, je me suis retrouvé avec un camion QL en plus....

Heureusement, j'ai trouvé sur le site de Ray Rimes un Bedford QL en impression 3D, mais cette fois avec une citerne de Tanker, donc antérieur à la version Refueller..

J'ai donc découpé la citerne de ce camion et l'ai légèrement modifiée pour l'adapter au châssis métallique du véhicule Arrowhead, puis j'ai décoré le véhicule aux couleurs de la Seconde Guerre mondiale avec le motif de camouflage Mickey Mouse.

So, with this tank change on a previous model, I ended up with an extra QL truck....

Fortunately, I found a 3D printed Bedford QL on the Ray Rimes website, but this time with a tanker tank, so prior to the Refueller version.

So I cut out the body of this tanker truck and slightly modified it to fit the metal chassis of the Arrowhead vehicle, then I decorated the vehicle in World War II colors with the Mickey Mouse camouflage pattern.

Ici aussi, une précision sur le Bedford Tanker : Il y a eu une quantité de versions ou sous versions avec des modifications parfois mineures, comme un coffre sur la citerne pour abriter les tuyaux, ou 2 coffres....

Here too, a clarification on the Bedford Tanker : There have been a number of versions or sub-versions with sometimes minor modifications, such as a box on the tank to house the pipes, or 2 boxes....

Et pour rester dans la famille Bedford QL, un QLT, version transport de troupes, aussi utilisé par la RAF pour le transport des équipages de bombardiers jusqu'à leurs avions.

And to stay within the Bedford QL family, a QLT, troop transport version, also used by the RAF for transporting bomber crews to their aircraft.

1/144 Vickers FB5 "Gunbus"

A partir de ses recherches débutées en 1912 sur un avion de guerre armé, la Société Vickers a conçu le FB5, biplan à hélice propulsive et armé d'une mitrailleuse Vickers (plus tard remplacée par une Lewis) dont le premier vol date de juillet 1914, le définissant ainsi comme le premier avion de chasse au monde car conçu spécialement pour le combat aérien.

Après des débuts ratés (un premier appareil étant tombée entre les mains des Allemands...), le FB.5 a commencé à être utilisé par groupes de 2 ou 3, jusqu'à ce qu'il équipe entièrement le 11e Squadron du RFC, devenu le premier escadron de chasse.

Mais relativement lent et commençant à être surclassé notamment par le Fokker E.III Eindecker, le FB.5 a été retiré des premières lignes en 1916 et affecté à l'entrainement.

Ce FB.5 au 1/144 est un modèle d'impression 3D en métal trouvé à l'époque auprès de Shapeways (avec l'Albatros W.4 - voir ici et là).

Le seul travail a consisté à poncer le modèle pour essayer de supprimer le côté granuleux lié à l'impression 3D, mais qui sont particulièrement dures.

Mais comme pour l'Albatros, la seule solution a été de mastiquer et de peindre "généreusement" le modèle.

Donc, en l'absence de tout montage, le seul travail a été le mastiquage et la peinture pour réaliser ce FB.5 de deuxième production, reconnaissable à l'empennage plus grand.

Based on research that began in 1912 on an armed military aircraft, Vickers designed the FB5, a propeller-driven biplane armed with a Vickers machine gun (later replaced by a Lewis), which made its maiden flight in July 1914, thus establishing it as the world’s first fighter aircraft, as it was specifically designed for aerial combat.

After a failed start (the first aircraft had fallen into German hands...), the FB.5 began to be deployed in groups of two or three, until it eventually became the sole aircraft type in the 11th Squadron of the RFC, which went on to become the first fighter squadron.

However, because it was relatively slow and was beginning to be outclassed, particularly by the Fokker E.III Eindecker, the FB.5 was withdrawn from the front lines in 1916 and reassigned to training duties.

This 1/144-scale FB.5 is a 3D-printed metal model that I found back then on Shapeways (along with the Albatros W.4—see here and there).

The only work involved sanding the model to try to remove the grainy texture typical of 3D printing, but those areas were particularly tough.

But as with the Albatros, the only solution was to apply putty and paint the model “generously.”

So, since no assembly was required, the only work involved was filling and painting to create this second-production FB.5, recognizable by its larger tail section.

1/144 Short 184 (Part 2 and End)

Après les difficultés rappelées précédemment (voir ici) à cause des erreurs du kit en résine Skytrex, le montage s'est déroulé relativement facilement sauf une "pause" de plusieurs années pendant lesquelles le modèle est resté à moitié monté.

Pour la livrée, j'ai choisi, sur la base du fascicule de Windsock Datafile, le Short 184 portant le numéro 842, c'est à dire le second avion de série qui a la particularité d'être aussi le premier avion à avoir torpillé un navire.

Après avoir rejoint dans les Dardanelles le HMS Ben-My-Chree, un paquebot britannique transformé en porte-hydravions, ce Short 184 piloté par le Flight Commander Edmonds a torpillé un navire turc le 12 Août 1915, mais ce torpillage ne lui a pas été crédité car ce navire avait déjà été frappé par le sous-marin britannique E-14.

Mais même si le résultat a été contesté, cela n'a rien enlevé au succès du principe du torpillage.

Surtout que, le 17 août suivant, avec le même hydravion n°842, le Flight Commander Edmonds a récidivé en torpillant un autre navire dans la Mer de Marmara, qui a été éventré.

Voici donc ce Short 184 au 1/144, avec la livrée portée au début de la 1e Guerre Mondiale, ainsi que les premières cocardes des aéronefs militaires britanniques.

After the difficulties mentioned previously (see here) due to errors in the Skytrex resin kit, assembly went relatively smoothly, except for a ‘break’ of several years during which the model remained half-assembled.

For the livery, I chose, based on the Windsock Datafile booklet, the Short 184 bearing the number 842, i.e. the second production aircraft, which also has the distinction of being the first aircraft to have torpedoed a ship.

After joining HMS Ben-My-Chree, a British packet steamer converted into a seaplane carrier, in the Dardanelles, this Short 184 piloted by Flight Commander Edmonds torpedoed a Turkish ship on 12 August 1915, but this torpedoing was not credited to him because the ship had already been hit by the British submarine E-14.

But even though the result was disputed, this did not detract from the success of the torpedoing principle.

Especially since, on the following 17th of August, using the same seaplane No. 842, Flight Commander Edmonds did it again, this time torpedoing another ship in the Sea of Marmara, which was gutted.

Here is Short 184 in 1/144 scale, with the livery worn at the beginning of the First World War, as well as the first cockades of British military aircraft.

1/144 Short 184 (Part 1)

Pour ce modèle, c'était la première fois que je faisais un moule en silicone puis coulé du métal.

Mon beau-père chez qui nous étions, avait préparé des petites caisses en bois pour faire les moules en silicone (ici avec le fuselage du Short 184 et une aile d'un Handley Page, tous deux provenant du fabricant Skytrex).

For this model, it was the first time I had made a silicone mould and then cast metal.

My father-in-law, with whom we were staying, had prepared small wooden boxes to make silicone moulds (here with the fuselage of the Short 184 and a wing from a Handley Page, both from the manufacturer Skytrex).

D'ailleurs, c'était le plus excité de nous deux pour cette "nouvelle activité"....

Alors que nos premières coulées étaient presque parfaites pour des débutants, il était toujours à proposer une dernière coulée...., et du coup, nous nous sommes fait engueuler car tout le monde nous attendait pour le diner où nous sommes arrivés avec plus d'une heure de retard....

In fact, he was the more excited of the two of us about this "new activity"...

Although our first casts were almost perfect for beginners, he always wanted us to try one last cast... and as a result, we got told off because everyone was waiting for us for dinner and we arrived over an hour late...

Pas loin d'une dizaine d'années plus tard, j'ai ressorti ce modèle pour le monter et c'est alors que je me suis rendu compte de la catastrophe.

Rien à voir avec le travail réalisé avec mon beau-père, mais le modèle de base produit par Skytrex était totalement faux.

Le fuselage est plus long, plus gros et la forme du bloc moteur n'est pas conforme du tout....

Almost ten years later, I took out this model to assemble it, and that's when I realised what a disaster it was.

It was nothing like the work I had done with my father-in-law, but the basic model produced by Skytrex was completely wrong.

The fuselage is longer, larger, and the shape of the engine block is completely different....

Les ailes tant inférieure que supérieure, si elles sont conformes dans leur largeur et forme, sont beaucoup trop longues.

Both the lower and upper wings, although they are the correct width and shape, are much too long.

Les principaux flotteurs sont eux aussi trop grands, même s'ils sont bien dans la forme.

The main floats are also too large, even though they are the right shape.

Au final, la dérive et les ailerons de queue sont aussi largement trop grands.

Ultimately, the rudder and tail fins are also far too large.

Donc, il a fallu jouer avec la meuleuse, puis la ponceuse, au moins pour le fuselage et lui donner la taille et la forme correctes.

So, we had to use the grinder, then the sander, at least for the fuselage, to give it the correct size and shape.

Les autres rectifications ont été plus simples même si fastidieuses....

Mais ce n'est qu'il y a quelques jours que j'ai repris ce modèle pour le terminer.

Donc, à suivre....

The other corrections were simpler, albeit tedious....

But it was only a few days ago that I picked up this pattern again to finish it.

Short 184 - Part 2

1/144 De Havilland DH.114 Heron (Part 2 and End)

Après le démasquage du haut du fuselage, l'aspect de la peinture gris-métal est pas mal du tout et surtout, il n'y a aucune bavure sur le blanc.

After removing the masking tape from the top of the fuselage, the metallic grey paint looks pretty good, and most importantly, there are no smudges on the white.

Puis, vient l'étape des décalcomanies. Et là, un petit souci....

La bande de fuselage comportant les hublots est surmontée d'une ligne grise, qu'on retrouve aussi à la fin de la ligne, qui tombe pile-poil sur l'aileron horizontal de queue....

Then comes the decal stage. And here, there's a slight problem...

The fuselage strip with the windows is topped by a grey line, which is also found at the end of the line, which falls right on the horizontal tail fin...

Et là, il a fallu "jouer sur scalpel".

Heureusement que la planche Classic-Airlines est de bonne qualité.

Heureusement aussi que j'avais la planche d'origine de F-Rsin pour récupérer un bout de porte d'accès, découpée avec le gris de la bande de fuselage, et pour la porte de soute arrière oubliée par Classic-Airlines (et qui apparaît bien dans la photo ci-dessous à droite).

And then it was time to ‘play with the scalpel’.

Luckily, the Classic-Airlines sheet is of good quality.

Luckily too that I had the original F-Rsin board to salvage a piece of the access door, cut out with the grey fuselage strip, and for the rear cargo door forgotten by Classic Airlines (which can be clearly seen in the photo below on the right).

Le reste de la pose des décalques s'est fait sans problème particulier, ainsi que la peinture des derniers détails : échappements, hélices, etc.

Et donc voici, au 1/144, le De Havilland DH.144 dans sa version Mk.1B, c'est à dire avec le train d'atterrissage fixe, aux couleurs de la compagnie Morton Air Services, une des premières compagnies aériennes privées britanniques fondée en 1945.

The rest of the decals were applied without any particular problems, as was the painting of the final details: exhaust pipes, propellers, etc.

And so here it is, in 1/144 scale, the De Havilland DH.144 in its Mk.1B version, i.e. with fixed landing gear, in the colours of Morton Air Services, one of the first British private airlines founded in 1945.
