1/144 Bell HUL-1 Ranger (47J)

Le Bell 47J est un hélicoptère quadriplace avec fuselage entièrement caréné, dernière évolution du Bell 47 construit à plus de 5000 exemplaires, et plus connu sous son nom militaire Bell H-13 Sioux, notamment grâce au film MASH.

Le modèle a été coulé en métal à partir du kit de LF Models, et le montage et la peinture se sont passés sans problèmes.

La livrée choisie est celle d'un hélicoptère de l'US Navy affecté sur le brise-glace USS Atka pendant la première opération Deep Freeze en Antarctique.

The Bell 47J Ranger is a four-seater helicopter with a fully faired fuselage, the latest evolution of the Bell 47 of which more than 5000 were built, and better known by its military name Bell H-13 Sioux, notably thanks to the film MASH.

The model was cast in metal from the LF Models kit, and assembly and painting went smoothly.

The chosen livery is that of a US Navy helicopter assigned to the icebreaker USS Atka during the first Deep Freeze operation in Antarctica.

Il y a quelques années, j'ai présenté un modèle en métal de CH-47 Chinook dans sa version britannique, provenant du fabricant de jouets Maisto, et dont les dimensions correspondaient à très peu de choses près à un modèle au 1/144 (voir ici).

Mais après ces vérifications de dimensions, j'ai eu l'occasion d'en acheter un second, qui est resté près d'une dizaine d'années dans la réserve....

Depuis l'achat, j'avais l'idée de le décorer aux couleurs d'un hélicoptère de la Guerre du Golfe, enfin, la première, puisque elles sont numérotées.....

Néanmoins j'hésitais, car les livrées n'étaient pas des plus originales...., même s'il y en avait une que je trouvais très attrayante mais que je considérais au delà de mes capacités de peintre....

Jusqu'à ces derniers jours.

Le seul problème a été de bien différencier le camouflage apparaissant sur de nombreuses photos de l'hélicoptère après le retour en Grande Bretagne, modifié notamment pour l'emplacement des codes d'appareil, par rapport à celui initial porté pendant la Guerre du Golf et qui ne figure que sur très peu de photos.

Sur l'hélicoptère lui-même, je n'ai modifié que les trains d'atterrissage comme le premier et jai changé les moteurs pour en mettre avec les filtres à sable provenant de Retrokit.

Voici donc le Boeing Chinook HC.1 immatriculé ZA712 et sa livrée pour le moins singulière, et tout sauf chatoyante..

A few years ago, I presented a metal model of the British version of the CH-47 Chinook, from the toy manufacturer Maisto, whose dimensions corresponded very closely to a 1/144 model (see here).

But after these dimensional checks, I had the opportunity to buy a second one, which remained in stash for nearly ten years....

Since buying it, I'd been thinking of decorating it with the colors of a Gulf War helicopter, or rather, the first one, since they're numbered.....

However I was hesitant, because the liveries were not the most original..., although there was one that I found very attractive but which I considered beyond my painting abilities....

Until these last few days.

The only problem was to differentiate the camouflage appearing on many photos of the helicopter after its return to Great Britain, modified in particular for the location of the aircraft codes, from the initial camouflage worn during the Gulf War, which appears on only very few photos.

On the helicopter itself, I only modified the landing gear like the first one and changed the engines to put them with the sand filters from Retrokit.

Here is the Boeing Chinook HC.1 registered ZA712 and its livery, which is, to say the least, unusual and anything but shimmering.

1/144 Sikorsky Ch-54 Tarhe

Cela fait des années que j'ai ce modèle en résine au fond de la réserve, trouvé sur Ebay, et provenant d'un fabricant d'Europe de l'Est.

I have had this resin model in the bottom of the stash for years, found on Ebay and from an Eastern European manufacturer.

Il y a aussi quelques années, j'ai coulé en métal le fuselage et les supports de trains, et je l'ai laissé "se reposer" encore plusieurs années dans la réserve avec le master en résine.....

Puis, lors d'un déplacement au Japon cette année, j'ai réussi à me faire livrer quelques modèles, dont un modèle identique de Ch-54 réalisé par Anigrand et trouvé sur Dameya.

Je n'avais donc plus d'excuses pour ne pas monter ce modèle.

Le montage a nécessité pas mal de recherches car si le kit Anigrand est particulièrement succinct quant au montage (comme d'habitude) le kit initial n'a rien, strictement rien, comme explications ou notice...

En plus, quelques pièces de même usage sont différentes entre les 2 kits....

Also a few years ago, I cast the fuselage and landing gear supports in metal, and I let it 'rest' for several more years in the stash with the resin master.....

Then, during a trip to Japan this year, I managed to get a few models delivered to me, including an identical Ch-54 model made by Anigrand and found on Dameya.

So I had no more excuses not to build this model.

The assembly required a lot of research because if the Anigrand kit is particularly succinct in terms of assembly (as usual) the initial kit has nothing, absolutely nothing, as explanations or instructions...

In addition, some of the parts used for the same purpose are different between the 2 kits....

Mais, bon, même si cela a été un peu long, le montage proprement dit s'est effectué sans problème.

Et voici donc le résultat, le Sikorsky CH-54 Tarhe (nom indien d'une grue) au 1/144, en métal, qui est vraiment un drôle d'oiseau....

But, although it took a little while, the assembly itself was carried out without problem.

And here is the result, the Sikorsky CH-54 Tarhe (Indian name of a crane) at 1/144, in metal, which is really a funny bird....

1/144 Aérospatiale SA341 Gazelle - by Chaubet

Après le North American F-86D Sabre Dog (voir ici) et le North American T-28 Trojan (voir là), voici le 3ème modèle produit par M. Chaubet pour cette saison d'hiver 2021-2022 : L'hélicoptère Aérospatiale (anciennement Sud Aviation) SA341 Gazelle, réalisé aux couleurs de l'ALAT (Aviation Légère de l'Armée de Terre).

After the North American F-86D Saber Dog (see here) and the North American T-28 Trojan (see there), here is the 3rd model produced by Mr. Chaubet for this winter season 2021-2022 : The Aérospatiale (formerly Sud Aviation) SA341 Gazelle helicopter, made in colors of the ALAT (the equivalent of the British Army Air Corps, user of this same helicopter, manufactured by Westland).

Cela fait des années que j'ai ce kit Minifigs en métal dans la réserve, sans trop quoi savoir en faire, car je ne trouvais pas de livrée intéressante....

Et puis, en recherchant parmi les fabricants de décalques, j'ai enfin trouvé chez Draw Decal, au 1/144, la livrée de 4 des hélicoptères du Service de Sécurité de la Nasa, qui interviennent pour protéger le site du Centre Spatial Kennedy lors de lancement de fusées et des navettes spatiales.

Le montage du kit s'effectue sans problèmes, et la seule difficulté (en tous cas pour moi....) a été la peinture blanche (je ne sais pas pourquoi, mais j'ai toujours des difficultés à peindre cette couleur....).

Les décalques sont de très bonne qualité et se posent facilement.

I have had this metal Minifigs kit for years in the reserve, not really knowing what to do with it, because I could not find an interesting livery....

And then, while researching among the decal manufacturers, I finally found at Draw Decal, the livery of 4 of the helicopters of the Nasa Security Service, which intervene to protect the site of the Kennedy Space Center during rockets and space shuttles launching.

The assembly of the kit is carried out without problems, and the only difficulty (at least for me ....) was the white paint (I don't know why, but I still have difficulty to paint this color....).

The decals are of very good quality and can be applied easily.

1/144 Sikorsky S-58 (H-34 Choctaw)

Après le français et celui de l'US Navy, le dernier de la série des Sikorsky S-58 au 1/144, cette fois aux couleurs des US Marines.
Je rappelle que la dénomination S-58 est celle du fabricant Sikorsky, cet hélicoptère ayant été aussi appelé HSS-1 Seabat par l'US Navy et H-34 Choctaw par l'US Army et les US Marines.
C'est un modèle que j'avais commandé monté et peint à M. Chaubet, et sur lequel j'ai réalisé la décoration, avec vraiment beaucoup, beaucoup de décalques à poser lettres par lettres.
Mais je trouvais cette décoration trop bien avec ces yeux....


After the French and the one of US Navy, the last of the series of Sikorsky S-58 at 1/144, this time in the colors of US Marines.
I recall that the name S-58 is that of the manufacturer Sikorsky, this helicopter having been also called HSS-1 Seabat by the US Navy and H-34 Choctaw by the US Army and the US Marines.
This is a model I ordered mounted and painted to Mr. Chaubet, and on which I realized the décoration, with really many, many decals to put letters by letters.
But I found this decoration too good with these eyes....

1/144 Sud-Aviation Super Frelon - by Chaubet

Vous vous rappelez peut-être qu'il y a quelques mois, M. Chaubet a réalisé un Super Frelon, hélicoptère lourd français dont les particularités étaient une coque hydravion et des flotteurs latéraux dans lesquels s'escamotaient les roues.

Il a donc été principalement utilisé en France par la Marine Nationale, tant dans sa version de lutte anti sous marins (reconnaissable à son radome sur le nez) qu'en version transport, sa partie cargo permettant d'embarquer 27 hommes équipés.


You may remember that a few months ago, Mr. Chaubet realized a Super Frelon (Super Hornet), French heavy helicopter whose particularities were a seaplane hull and side floats in which the wheels were retracted.

It was therefore mainly used in France by the French Navy, both in its anti-submarine version (recognizable by its radome on the nose) and in the transport version, its cargo part allowing to board 27 equipped men.

Cet hélicoptère a été utilisé par l'Irak, Israël, la Syrie, la Lybie, la Chine (qui en a fabriqué sous licence puis des versions améliorées, sous le nom de Changhe Z8 - voir ici) et par l'Afrique du Sud.

C'est d'ailleurs la commande spéciale que j'ai faite à M. Chaubet pour avoir une version Sud-Africaine, comportant les modifications suivantes : absence de radome sur le nez, pas de flotteurs latéraux, et rajout de filtres aux entrées d'air.


This helicopter has been used by Iraq, Israel, Syria, Libya, China (which has manufactured under license and improved versions under the name Changhe Z8 - see here) and by South Africa.

It is besides the special order that I made to Mr. Chaubet to have a South-African version, including the following modifications: no radome on the nose, no lateral floats, and addition of air inlet filters.

Je me suis contenté de poser les décalques de l'appareil choisi.

I just put the decals of the chosen helicopter.
