1/144 Snow Cruiser - Part 2

Après la présentation de ce véhicule original qu'est le Snow Cruiser (voir ici), voici le modèle en résine au 1/144.

Après avoir passé des années au fond d'un placard, j'ai commencé à y travailler, puis je l'ai laissé, pour le reprendre plus tard, et le laisser à nouveau jusqu'au début de l'été où j'y ai travaillé sérieusement.....

Si le montage n'était pas compliqué s'agissant d'un modèle monobloc, le seul problème était de trouver la bonne couleur rouge pour représenter ce véhicule destiné à l'Antarctique. 

Les décalques se posent sans problème, mais il a fallu bien vérifier leur emplacement sur des photos d'époque.

La boîte combo (avec le Staggerwing) prévoit la possibilité de monter l'avion sur le Snow Cruiser, mais en réalité cette situation ne s'est jamais présentée à cause du poids du véhicule, de son incapacité à circuler autrement qu'en marche arrière et de monter des pentes à 35%....

Voici quelques photos brutes, avec un personnage (pour donner une idée de la taille) sensé représenter un policier ayant escorté le Snow Cruiser pendant son voyage entre Chicago et Boston.

Following the presentation of this original vehicle, the Snow Cruiser (see here), now is the 1/144 resin model.

After spending years at the bottom of a closet, I started working on it, then left it, only to pick it up again later, and leave it again until the beginning of summer when I worked on it seriously.....

While the assembly wasn't complicated given the one-piece model, the only problem was finding the right red color to represent this vehicle destined for the Antarctic. 

The decals fit without any problem, but their placement had to be carefully checked against period photos.

The combo box (with the Staggerwing) provides for the possibility of mounting the aircraft on the Snow Cruiser, but in reality this situation never arose due to the weight of the vehicle, its inability to move other than in reverse and to climb slopes of 35%....

Here, some raw photos, with a figure (to give an idea of ​​the size) supposed to represent a police officer who escorted the Snow Cruiser during its trip between Chicago and Boston.

Vous avez peut être remarqué que le Snow Cruiser est un peu "sali" avec de la neige...., pour être dans le ton de son utilisation en Antarctique.

Mais, comment rendre cet effet "Antarctique" plus marqué ?

Peut-être avec une base enneigée ?

Mais aussi avec un élément plus marqué ?

Peut-être quelque chose basé sur cette photo ?

Alors, bien sûr, comme je suis Corse, donc compatriote de Napoléon, j'ai choisi un empereur pour accompagner le Snow Cruiser, même s'il ne s'agit que d'un manchot empereur.....

You may have noticed that the Snow Cruiser is a little "dirty" with snow... to match its Antarctic use.

But how can we make this "Antarctic" effect more pronounced ?

Perhaps with a snowy base ?

But also with a more pronounced element ?

Maybe something based on this photo ?

So, of course, as I am Corsican, and therefore a compatriot of Napoleon, I chose an emperor to accompany the Snow Cruiser, even if it is only an emperor penguin.....

Bon, il ne faut pas être très regardant, mon maquettisme animalier a besoin d'encore beaucoup de travail.....

1/144 Snow Cruiser - Part 1

Au retour de l'expédition en Antarctique de 1934 en tant que second de l'Amiral Byrd, le scientifique (physicien, chimiste, mathématicien) Thomas Poulter a conçu le Snow Cruiser, un véhicule destiné à permettre le voyage aller-retour au pôle Sud de scientifiques, pendant une durée de 12 mois environ, dans les conditions météorologiques difficiles du continent austral.

Ce véhicule 17 m de long et 4,6 m de large, pesait 30 tonnes et était conçu pour accueillir quatre à cinq personnes pendant un an avec toute leur nourriture, leur carburant et leur équipement, comportant une cuisine, un atelier d'usinage, une chambre noire et une salle radio.

Upon returning from the 1934 Antarctic expedition as Admiral Byrd's second in command, scientist (physicist, chemist, mathematician) Thomas Poulter designed the Snow Cruiser, a vehicle designed to enable scientists to travel to the South Pole and back, over a period of approximately 12 months, in the harsh weather conditions of the southern continent.

This vehicle, 17 m long and 4.6 m wide, weighed 20 tonnes and was designed to accommodate four to five people for a year with all their food, fuel and equipment, including a kitchen, a machine shop, a darkroom and a radio room.

Les roues pesaient chacune 318 kgs et faisaient 3 mètres de diamètre.

The wheels each weighed 318 kg and were 3 meters in diameter.

Construit près de Chicago, le Snow Cruiser a du traverser une bonne partie des Etats-Unis pour rejoindre Boston, à près de 1.000 miles ou 1.600 kilomètres, ce qui a attiré une foule immense.

Built near Chicago, the Snow Cruiser had to cross a large part of the United States to reach Boston, nearly 1,000 miles or 1,600 kilometers away, which attracted a huge crowd.

Après ce voyage de près d'un mois, le Snow Cruiser a été chargé (en démontant environ 1,50 mètres du compartiment arrière) sur le navire des Gardes Côtes North Star à destination de la base Little America en Antarctique, atteinte en janvier 1940.

After this nearly month-long voyage, the Snow Cruiser was loaded (dismantling about 1.50 meters of the aft compartment) onto the Coast Guard ship North Star bound for the Little America base in Antarctica, reached in January 1940.

Lors du déchargement du Snow Cruiser du navire jusqu'à la glace, la rampe construite de 24 mètres de long servant de pont s'est brisée sous le poids des 34 tonnes du véhicule, lequel a pu arriver sur la "glace ferme" que grace au réflexe du Dr Poulter qui a accéléré.

While unloading the Snow Cruiser from the ship onto the ice, the 24-meter-long ramp that served as a bridge broke under the weight of the 34-ton vehicle, which was only able to reach the "firm ice" thanks to Dr. Poulter's reflexes, who accelerated.

Mais le Snow Cruiser n'a pas tenu ses promesses car trop lourd, ses pneus lisses s'enfonçaient de près d'1 mètre dans la neige, et le véhicule n'arrivait pas à gravir certaines pentes alors qu'il avait été spécialement conçu pour ça.

Le trajet le plus long a été de 148 km entièrement en marche arrière, après qu'il ait été constaté que les pneus produisaient une meilleure traction en arrière.

But the Snow Cruiser didn't live up to its promises because it was too heavy, its slick tires sank nearly a meter into the snow, and the vehicle couldn't climb certain slopes despite being specifically designed for them.

The longest trip was 148 km entirely in reverse, after it was discovered that the tires provided better traction in reverse.

Le Snow Cruiser a été abandonné à la base de Little America le 22 décembre 1940, juste avant le début de la guerre contre le Japon.

En décembre 1946, l'Amiral Byrd a organisé une nouvelle expédition en Antarctique lors de laquelle une équipe a retrouvé le véhicule qui ne nécessitait qu'un regonflage des pneus et un simple entretien pour le rendre opérationnel, mais il n'a pas repris le service car dépassé par les véhicules à chenille apparus pendant la 2e guerre mondiale et plus performants.

Lors d'une nouvelle expédition en 1958, le Snow Cruiser a été retrouvé sous 7 mètres de neige mais après, il n'a pas été retrouvé, sans doute au fond de l'océan Austral ou enfoui profondément sous la neige et la glace.

The Snow Cruiser was abandoned at the Little America base on December 22, 1940, just before the outbreak of war against Japan.

In December 1946, Admiral Byrd organized a new expedition to Antarctica, during which a team recovered the vehicle, which required only tire inflation and simple maintenance to make it operational. However, it was not returned to service, having been overtaken by the more efficient tracked vehicles that appeared during World War II.

During a further expedition in 1958, the Snow Cruiser was found under 7 meters of snow, but it was not found afterward, probably at the bottom of the Southern Ocean or buried deep under snow and ice.

Alors, vous l'avez compris, le prochain post portera sur la maquette de ce véhicule énorme, produit en résine au 1/144 par BS Design qui proposait il y a quelques années, soit le véhicule seul, soit un combo avec en plus le Beech Staggerwing (que je vous présenterai dès que je l'aurai fini, mais pas avec le Snow Cruiser car compte tenu de l'impossibilité de se mouvoir, le véhicule n'a jamais porté l'avion).
