1/144 North American RA-5C Vigilante

Lorsque j'étais gamin (car oui, j'ai été un jeune aussi....😁), j'ai été fasciné (eh oui, encore, mais je suis facilement impressionnable....😄) par une maquette d'Airfix et son boxart, le North American RA-5C Vigilante.

When I was a kid (because yes, I was a young person too ....😁), I was fascinated (yes, again, but I am easily impressionable ....😄) by a model of Airfix and its boxart, the North American RA-5C Vigilante.

Mais, il n'y a pas eu que ça....(les amateurs de bande dessinée de "l'école franco-belge", par opposition aux comics anglo-saxons, vont me comprendre....).

Donc, quand j'étais jeune (vous noterez que j'insiste....), j'ai été "élévé au biberon" des aventures de Buck Danny, un pilote américain, qui fait des allers-retours entre l'USAAF (puis USAF) et l'US Navy, dont la carrière a débuté au début de la seconde guerre mondiale jusqu'à la guerre de Bosnie et l'Afghanistan, sans prendre une ride pas plus d'ailleurs que les autres personnages de la série...

Et parmi ses nombreuses aventures, le pilote Buck Danny a été amené à piloter le North American Vigilante mais dans sa première version de bombardier emportant une bombe atomique (même si la dénomination de l'avion n'est pas tout à fait conforme....).

But, it wasn't just that....(Comic fans from the "Franco-Belgian school", as opposed to Anglo-Saxon comics, will understand me ....).

So when I was young (you will note that I insist ....), I was "bottle-fed" by the adventures of Buck Danny, an American pilot, who goes back and forth between the USAAF ( then USAF) and the US Navy, whose career began at the beginning of the Second World War until the Bosnian War and Afghanistan, without taking a wrinkle any more than the other characters in the series ...

And among his many adventures, the pilot Buck Danny was brought in to fly the North American Vigilante but in its first version of a bomber carrying an atomic bomb (even if the name of the plane is not quite correct ... .).

C'est dans ces conditions que, dès que j'ai pu, j'ai demandé à M. Chaubet d'inclure ce modèle dans un des deux moules complets que je lui ai commandé (voir ici).

Ce modèle est énorme et lourd, à l'instar de l'original : plus de 23 mètres de longueur, plus de 16 mètres d'envergure et un poids à vide de 14 tonnes....

Alors, pour illustrer les spécifications de cet avion sur un porte-avions, j'avais envisagé des photos comme celles-ci....

It is under these conditions that, as soon as I was able, I asked Mr. Chaubet to include this model in one of the two complete molds that I ordered from him (see here).

This model is huge and heavy, just like the original : over 23 meters in length, over 16 meters wingspan and an empty weight of 14 tons....

So, to illustrate the specs of this aircraft on an aircraft carrier, I had considered photos like these ....

Mais, je préfère ces photos qui font plus honneur à cet avion.

But, I prefer these photos which do more credit to this plane.

Sauf que, une fois le montage et la peinture effectués, s'est posé le problème des décalques, rares au 1/144 pour cet avion.

Celles du kit ayant servi de master étaient inexploitables, car trop vieilles et sèches, et j'ai du avoir recours à celles de Superscale.

Mais si je n'ai pas eu de problème avec les décalques de ce fabricant pour les Crusader, F-105, P-38 Lightning, B-25 Mitchell etc, j'ai été incapable de trouver des photos correspondant aux livrées proposées pour le Vigilante.

J'ai donc dû user du scalpel pour les immatriculations, avec des décalques particulièrement fines...

Beaucoup de sueur et jurons...😈😇

Mais voici le résultat, au 1/144 et en métal, un Vigilante dont j'ai eu la chance de trouver plusieurs photos du même, à l'appontage....

Except that, once the assembly and painting were done, there was the problem of decals, rare at 1/144 for this aircraft.

Those of the kit having been used as master were unusable, because too old and dry, and I had to resort to those of Superscale.

But while I had no problem with this manufacturer's decals for the Crusader, F-105, P-38 Lightning, B-25 Mitchell etc, I was unable to find photos matching the liveries offered for the Vigilante.

So I had to use the scalpel for registrations, with particularly fine decals ...

Lots of sweat and swearing ...😈😇

But here is the result, at 1/144 and in metal, a Vigilante of which I was lucky to find several photos of the same, on the landing ....

Nouveaux projets - New projects

En fait, si la réalisation de modèles est assez lente, ce n'est pas le cas des projets....

Si j'ai une quinzaine de modèles à mouler et couler cet été (je vous en parlerai dans quelques jours....), ça ne me suffit pas et je suis obligé (oui, vous avez bien lu, obligé 😃) de passer commande de nouveaux modèles....

C'est ainsi qu'il y a quelques années, j'avais commandé à M. Chaubet un moule complet avec des modèles qu'il ne ferait sûrement pas, comme le Saab Tunnan, le Westland Wyvern, le Hawker Sea Hawk, le Fairey Gannet, le Boulton Paul P.111 et le Boulton Paul Defiant (voir ici).

In fact, if the realization of models is quite slow, this is not the case of projects....

If I have about fifteen models to mold and cast this summer (I will tell you about it in a few days....), that is not enough for me and I am obliged (yes, you read that correctly, obliged 😃) to order new models....

This is how a few years ago, I ordered from Mr. Chaubet a complete mold with models that he surely would not make, like the Saab Tunnan, the Westland Wyvern, the Hawker Sea Hawk, the Fairey Gannet, Boulton Paul P.111 and Boulton Paul Defiant (see here).
