1/144 North American YF-107 Ultra Sabre

As a part of a competition for a new fighter-bomber organized by the USAF in the 1950s, the North American company presented the F-107 derived from its successful fighter and then fighter-bomber (more than 2000 built), the F-100 Super Sabre.

This aircraft featured a weapons bay (capable of carrying nuclear ordnance) beneath the fuselage, which necessitated placing the air intake on the fuselage just behind the cockpit.

The competition having been won by the Republic F-105 Thunderchief, production of the YF-107 was limited to 3 prototypes which were used for high-speed research with NACA, the predecessor of NASA, and now 2 of which are displayed in US museums, the 3rd having been damaged in a takeoff accident.

The model shown was cast in metal based on an Anigrand resin kit, and assembly and painting did not present any problems.

All the red-orange markings are provided as high-quality decals that are highly durable, particularly when exposed to setting solutions...

1/144 Kyushu J7W Shinden

Designed to counter B-29 Superfortress bomber raids on Japan (with a turboprop development planned), the Kyushu J7W Shinden ("Magnificent Lightning"), with its wings behind the fuselage, was a true revolution with its canard wing on the nose.

However, the only two prototypes built made their maiden flights just as Japan was surrendering.

I’ve had the F-Toys model of the J7W Shinden for years, but I have to admit that it was after seeing the movie "Godzilla Minus One" that I felt an irresistible urge to add it to my collection.

After casting it in metal this summer, the assembly and painting went quite quickly.

Here is this particularly imposing plane (see the photo with the characters and the one with the model and the pilot that I regularly present to give an idea of the size).

1/144 Ryan L-17 Navion

To resume work with the models cast during the last summer, here is a model known but not really from a bonus of an Anigrand kit (but I don't remember which one....).

Designed by North American, which built just over a thousand before production was taken over by the Ryan Aeronautical Company, which also built more than a thousand, the Navion is a four-seater single-engine aircraft, originally designed in anticipation of the post-war boom in civil aviation which, however did not materialise to the extent that the manufacturers had hoped, but which also played an important role in military operations, under the designation L-17, particularly for liaison flights, light transport, medical evacuation and forward air control.

The molding and metal casting went smoothly, as did the assembly and painting.

For a change, I decided to finish it in the colors of one of the few aircraft supplied by the USA to the Greek Air Force, back when it was known as the Royal Hellenic Air Force.

But why such a obscure and, it must be said, rather ordinary livery...?

But for the future museum of propeller aircraft from small Air Forces, of course.....😀

You think it's not bad...?

But during demolding, which sometimes happens with 3D printed masters, the resin or plastic used sticks to the silicone....

So, for the wings and engines, part of the mold remained attached to the parts, whereas this didn't happen with the fuselage.

A suivre donc...

We'll see during the sanding, and if I can't get the engine and wing lines right, I'll make another mold next year....

1/144 Beechcraft Staggerwing - Part 1

The Snow Cruiser kit (shown here) also included the Beechcraft Staggerwing, an aircraft built in over 700 examples between 1933 and 1949, distinguished by its upper wing being offset rearward relative to the lower wing.

While it was never fitted to the Snow Cruiser as is often mistakenly claimed, this aircraft did participate in the first Antarctic expedition with the "Red Monster."

The metal casting of this model went smoothly, but the difficulties arose afterwards....

Firstly, the painting was tricky because, on the one hand, red and yellow are paints with poor coverage, and on the other hand, the interweaving of these two colors.

It was necessary to play around with the masking tape and make touch-ups, a little bit everywhere.

The second difficulty concerned the wing masts, painted on their resin casting base, which were very difficult to detach, resulting in some breakage, a need for glue and a few choice curses....

Positioning these masts was also tricky, as there are no instructions or markings indicating where to fix them.

The third problem, this one more significant : the landing gear.

The resin parts in the kit broke, and they were so thin that it was impossible to glue them back together.

In any case, they weren't at all compatible with the very specific landing gear of this aircraft (and I'm not even mentioning the landing gear wells that had to be cut into the lower wing, without the slightest instruction from the kit manufacturer).

It was necessary to rummage through the box of spare parts to find some kind of fork-like fittings corresponding to the two parts of the landing gear, and then use super-thin flexible wire to create a spring on one of the two parts...

1/144 Beechcraft Staggerwing diecast metal aircraft miniature

Rest assured, the shock absorber mounts will be cut and refined to match the size of the aircraft and the scale of the model as closely as possible.

I must confess that I cheated a little because I only made the "normal" landing gear, that is to say, intended for the wheels, whereas the one intended for the skis included a set of tubes that seemed impossible to make, to hold together, especially with the weight of the metal model.

Especially since there are no instructions, and the photos aren't always very clear on all these pipes....

1/144 Beechcraft Staggerwing diecast metal aircraft miniature

In this other photo, which again shows the complexity of ski landing gear, it seemed to me that the skis were yellow-orange like the wings of the plane, and not red as often presented.

But anyway, since there are no further instructions regarding the colors..., it's the same yellow as for the wings that I finally chose.

1/144 Beechcraft Staggerwing diecast metal aircraft miniature

The fourth problem concerned the decals.

Surprisingly, these are of good quality, they do not break or tangle and the application of the decals therefore went without any problems.

The difficulty concerned the colour of some : wing registration proposed in red and tail registration provided in black.

The photo below :
- regarding the wing markings, seems to show that they are red on a yellow-orange background, but I'm wary of these "colorized" photos where, because the aircraft is red, this color appears almost everywhere...
- regarding the tail fin, the marking seems clear, not white like the manufacturer's name at the top of the fin, but rather yellow or gray or something like that...

So, for the wings, I chose a black registration (which seemed more credible to be more visible against the yellow-orange) and for the tail, as the Beechcraft brand is supplied in black, I kept the black registration supplied by the model manufacturer for the sake of consistency.....

1/144 Beechcraft Staggerwing diecast metal aircraft miniature

Finally, there was the fitting of the skis and the horizontal stabilizers, which are not quite symmetrical and rather fragile because they are simply glued onto the fuselage without any tenon or other fastening system.

*    *    *

This model was particularly difficult due to the lack of any information on assembly, painting, where to attach accessories, where to make the cockpit windows or the access door, and I must admit that in the end I was so fed up that I told myself that if it broke or didn't go as planned, I would stop with this model, even if it meant throwing it away.....

Okay, so what's the result ?
In the next message... 😀
