1/144 De Havilland DH 108 Swallow

Provenant d'un lot de kits en métal réalisés par un fabriquant qui n'entendait pas continuer les modèles d'avion, voici un De Havilland DH 108 Swallow, que j'ai monté, peint et décoré.

Inspiré sans doute par le Messerschmitt Me 163 Komet, tout au moins concernant le choix d'un seul stabilisateur vertical, et basé sur certaines parties du De Havilland Vampire (nez, cockpit, partie du fuselage....) le De Havilland Swallow a été décliné en 3 prototypes.

Le premier prototype, TG283, a effectué son premier vol en mai 1946, pour des recherches sur basses vitesses. Ce premier prototype s'écrasera finalement en 1950, tuant son pilote.

Le second prototype, TG306, lors d'un vol de septembre 1946, s'est écrasé après avoir subi des défaillances structurelles à près de mach 1, tuant son pilote, Geoffrey de Havilland Jr.

Coming from a batch of metal kits made by a manufacturer who did not intend to continue with the airplane models, here is a De Havilland DH 108 Swallow, which I assembled, painted and decorated.

Probably inspired by the Messerschmitt Me 163 Komet, at least concerning the choice of a single vertical stabilizer, and based on certain parts of the De Havilland Vampire (nose, cockpit, part of the fuselage ....) the De Havilland Swallow has been declined in 3 prototypes.

The first prototype, TG283, made its first flight in May 1946, for research on low speeds. This first prototype will finally crash in 1950, killing its pilot.

The second prototype, TG306, during a flight in September 1946, crashed after suffering structural failures at near Mach 1, killing its pilot, Geoffrey de Havilland Jr.

Le troisième et dernier prototype, VW120, avec différentes modifications dont un nez plus profilé et une verrière aérodynamique et renforcée, a effectué son premier vol en juillet 1947, puis en avril 1948, a établi un record de vitesse à 974 km/h.

Finalement, cet avion, dont un de ses pilotes d'essai le décrira comme "un tueur", s'écrasera lui aussi en février 1950, tuant aussi son pilote...

Une fois monté et peint, j'ai longtemps hésité à poser les décalcomanies sur ce modèle, tellement je le trouvais beau "sans artifices", avec ses lignes si pures...

The third and last prototype, VW120, with various modifications including a more streamlined nose and an aerodynamic and reinforced canopy, made its first flight in July 1947, then in April 1948, set a speed record of 974 km / h.

Finally, this plane, which one of his test pilots described as "a killer", also crashed in February 1950, also killing its pilot ....

Once assembled and painted, I hesitated for a long time to put the decals on this model, I found it so beautiful "without artifice", with its pure lines ...

Mais finalement, ça faisait trop inachevé, alors voici donc le 3ème prototype du De Havilland Swallow, après pose des décalques.....

La seconde bonne surprise de l’été.
Je suis tombé par hasard sur Ebay, sur la vente d’un kit en métal d’un prototype anglais d’après-guerre.

The second pleasant surprise of the summer.
I saw by chance on Ebay, the sale of a metal kit of an English post-war prototype.

De Havilland 108 Swallow

Après avoir pu acheter ce modèle,  le vendeur m’a contacté pour demander si j’étais intéressé par d’autres modèles du même genre, qui étaient le résultat d’essais qu’il avait faits avec l’un de ses associés, mais sans persévérer, dans le diecast d’avions au 1/144.
Pourtant comme vous pouvez le voir sur les photos, le moulage est très fin et de grande qualité.
J’ai bien entendu été intéressé et à l’issue, voici ce que j’ai reçu :

After have bought this model, the seller contacted me to ask if I was interested in other models of the same type, that were the test results he had made with one of his associates, but without persevere, in diecast aircraft 1/144.
But as you can see on the photos, the cast is very fine and of high quality.

Of course, I was interested and after, here's what I got :

1- Supermarine S6B

Hydravion de course vainqueur de la course Schneider en 1931 (Un autre battra un record de vitesse sept jours plus tard : 655 km/h)

2- Hughes H-1

Avion de course conçu notamment par Howard Hughes qui va battre un record de vitesse en 1935 : 567 km/h.
(A ne pas confondre avec un 2ème H-1 construit à partir du premier accidenté, avec des ailes plus longues et qui a établi un record de vitesse entre Los Angeles et New York en 1937)

3- Messerschmitt 209

Avion du record du monde de vitesse en 1939 : 751 km/h 

(A ne pas confondre avec le Me 209 qui était une extrapolation du Me 109 destiné à le remplacer).

(Not to be confused with the Me 209 was an extrapolation of the Me 109 for replacement).

4- Hawker Hunter F.3

Version modifiée du protype du Hawker Hunter (voir notamment le nez comparé au modèle de base présenté ici), le F.3 établira un record du monde de vitesse en septembre 1953 : 1171 km/h

Modified version of the Hawker Hunter protype (see especially the nose compared to the basis model presented here), the F.3 will establish a world record for speed in September 1953 : 1171 km/h

5- De Havilland Dh.88 Comet

Et en cadeau, un modèle que je n’aurais jamais espéré : il a gagné la course Londres-Melbourne en 1934.

Il y a juste un aileron qui est endommagé mais qui devrait pouvoir être refait en carte plastique.

Et maintenant, au boulot...

And as a gift, a model that I would never have expected: : it won the London-Melbourne race in 1934.

There is just a spoiler that is damaged but should be redone in plastic card.
