1/144 Piper L-4 Cub

C'est petit, c'est rustique, ça se range facilement pour le voyage.
Qu'est ce que c'est ?


It's small, it's rustic, it stores easily for travel.
What is that ?

C'est l'avion léger Piper Cub, dans sa version militaire L-4 avec une verrière plus importante, surnommé Grasshopper (sauterelle), et utilisé comme avion d'entraînement, d'observation, de réglage d'artillerie, de liaison et d'évacuation sanitaire.

J'ai déjà expliqué, concernant le Taylorcraft Auster (voir ici), comment David Jackson, fabricant de modèles en métal au 1/144 sous le nom de Realmwerks, m'avait très gentiment donné, avant d'arrêter son activité, deux modèles qu'il envisageait de produire.
Après le Taylorcraft Auster, le second modèle est le Piper L-4 Cub.

Ce modèle est petit, très petit mais exact (j'ai vérifié les mesures et par rapport au kit en résine de Dameya).
Le montage était très simple, les seules difficultés ayant été les barres de soutien des ailes et de celles du train d'atterrissage.
Pour la peinture, rien de bien particulier, si ce n'est une très très longue séance de masquage pour la verrière....


It is the light aircraft Piper Cub, in its military version L-4 with a larger canopy, nicknamed Grasshopper, and used as a training, observation, artillery spotting, liaison and medical evacuation aircraft.

I have already explained, concerning the Taylorcraft Auster (see here), how David Jackson, manufacturer of metal models at 1/144 under the name of Realmwerks, had very kindly given me, before stopping his activity, two models that he planned to produce.
After the Taylorcraft Auster, the second model is the Piper L-4 Cub.

This model is small, very small but exact (I checked the measurements and compared to the Dameya resin kit).
The assembly was very simple, the only difficulties having been the support bars of the wings and those of the landing gear.
For painting, nothing very special, except a very very long masking session for the canopy....

Et voici donc, au 1/144, en métal, un Piper L-4 Cub, peint aux couleurs d'un avion d'observation et de réglage d'artillerie qui a décollé du porte-avions USS Wasp pendant l'Opération Torch, le débarquement en Afrique du Nord en 1942.

And so here, in 1/144, in metal, is a Piper L-4 Cub, painted in the colors of an observation and artillery spotting aircraft which took off from the aircraft carrier USS Wasp during Operation Torch, the landing in North Africa in 1942.

1/144 Taylorcraft Auster

No posts tomorrow because I must go near Toulouse (South of France) to one of the largest exhibitions of antique toys.

En attendant, un peu d'histoire : Avant Old Glory, il y avait True North Miniatures et encore avant, il y avait Realmwerks.

Je m’explique : Il y a quelques années, David Jackson avait produit sous la marque Realmwerks, différents kits d’avions en métal, au 15 mm, avec également des décalcomanies d’assez bonne qualité pour les décorer, avant de tout céder à True North Miniatures qui les a cédés à Old Glory, mais les décalques ont désormais disparu du catalogue.

Une bonne partie des modèles Realmwerks (et donc ceux de Old Glory maintenant) étaient un peu petits pour du 1/144, mais on pouvait en utiliser certains comme base, tel le Macchi Mc.200 Saetta (voir ici).

Avant d’arrêter et de vendre à True North Miniatures, David Jackson m’a offert 2 modèles qu’il envisageait de mettre en production, et annoncés sur TMP (ici), mais qui ne le seront jamais.

Le premier est le Taylorcraft Auster Mk.V, avion de liaison et de repérage d’artillerie anglais.

Je le trouvais vraiment petit, mais c’est un petit avion. J’ai vérifié ses dimensions qui étaient exactes, ce qui a été confirmé par la comparaison avec le kit en résine de Fox One Models.

Pour changer des décorations camouflées, j’ai choisi un avion ayant participé à une expédition en Antarctique dans les années 50 et j’ai donc simplement ajouté des skis pour le train atterrissage.

Meanwhile, a bit of history : Before Old Glory, there was True North Miniatures and before that, there was Realmwerks.

Let me explain : There are some years ago, David Jackson produced under the brand Realmwerks, different aircraft kits in metal, at 15 mm, also with good decals to decorate them, before selling everything to True North Miniatures which has sold to Old Glory, but the decals have now disappeared from the catalog.

Many of Realmwerks models (and those of Old Glory now) were small for the 1/144, but you could use some as basis like the Macchi Saetta MC.200 (see here).

Before stopping and sell to True North Miniatures, David Jackson offered me two models that it plans to put into production, and announced on TMP (here), but never will.

The first is the Taylorcraft Auster Mk.V, British liaison and artillery spotting aircraft.

I thought it was really small, but it's a small plane. I checked its dimensions, they were accurate, which was confirmed by comparison with the Fox One Models resin kit.

To change of camouflaged liveries, I chose an aircraft that participated in an expedition to Antarctica in the 50s, and so I just added skis for the landing gear.

1/144 Macchi Mc.200 Saetta

Voici un modèle dont je suis particulièrement fier.
Lorsque le fabricant japonais Sweet a produit son kit plastique de Macchi MC.200 Saetta, j'ai pensé pouvoir utiliser les décalques et certaines pièces comme l'hélice et les trains d’atterrissage pour en faire un en métal avec le modèle de True North Miniatures (Realmwerks), maintenant repris par Old Glory (lien).


Here is a model wich I am particularly proud.
When the Japanese manufacturer Sweet has produced its Macchi MC.200 plastic kit, I thought I could use decals and some parts like the propeller and landing gear to make one in metal with the model of True North Miniatures (Realmwerks), now taken over by Old Glory (link).

Même si la longueur et la largeur étaient globalement correctes, j'ai été un peu déçu par le modèle de True North : le capot moteur était particulièrement plat et le moteur en étoile quasiment ridicule.

Even if the length and width were generally correct, I was a little disappointed by the True North model  : the engine hood was particularly flat and the radial engine almost ridiculous.

Il a fallu donc épaissir le capot moteur, en posant une plaque de métal et beaucoup de mastic pour arriver à quelque chose de correct.

Pour le moteur, j'ai simplement supprimé celui qui existait pour le remplacer par celui de Sweet.

Puis, la pose des trains d'atterrissage, la roulette de queue, la peinture de base puisque le camouflage des ailes et du fuselage est en décalques.

Et voilà le résultat.

It was therefore necessary to thicken the engine hood, posing a metal plate and a lot of putty to get something decent.
For the engine, I just deleted the one that existed to replace it with the one of Sweet.
Then, laying the landing gear, tail wheel, the base paint because the wings and fuselage camouflage is on decals.
And here is the result.
