1/144 Falkland War - Part 2

Sur une base avancée en cours de remise en état sur une des Iles Falkland, sous la protection d’un FV-107 Scimitar des Blues and Royals, un Hawker Siddeley Harrier GR.3 du Squadron 1(F) de la RAF, basé sur le HMS Hermes, vient de se poser sur un bout de piste réparé par des militaires du 11 Independant Field Squadron des Royal Engineers avec des plaques de PSP trouvées sur place en remplacement de leur matériel perdu sur l’Antlantic Conveyor, pendant que des démineurs vérifient si l’épave d’un FMA Pucara du Grupo 3 de Ataque, III Brigada Aerea, n’est pas piégé.

On a forward base being rehabilitated on one of the Falkland Islands, under the protection of an FV-107 Scimitar of the Blues and Royals, a Hawker Siddeley Harrier GR.3 of 1(F) Squadron RAF, based on HMS Hermes, has just landed on a repaired stretch of runway by soldiers from 11 Independent Field Squadron of the Royal Engineers with PSP plates found on the spot in replacement of their equipment lost on the Atlantic Conveyor, while deminers check if the wreckage of an FMA Pucara of Grupo 3 de Ataque, III Brigada Aerea, is not trapped.

Falkland War Part 1

1/144 Falkland War

Ouf... Juste à temps.....
Eh oui, je voulais faire un diorama pour les 40 ans du conflit des Iles Malouines de 1982, et je viens juste de le terminer, juste à la fin de l'année 2022.
Donc, il était donc temps....

Il faut dire que j'ai longtemps hésité sur quoi et comment faire ce diorama.

Dans un premier temps, j'ai voulu m'inspirer de ce dessin....

Phew... Just in time.....

Yes, I wanted to make a diorama for the 40th anniversary of the 1982 Falkland Islands conflict, and I just finished it, just at the end of 2022.

So, it was about time....

It must be said that I hesitated for a long time on what and how to make this diorama.

At first, I wanted to draw inspiration from this drawing....

Mais, j'ai rencontré un problème.... Vous imaginez le poids d'un Avro Vulcan en métal ? Et pour le faire tenir en l'air....?

Alors, plus modestement, j'ai voulu m'inspirer de ça....

But, I encountered a problem... Can you imagine the weight of a metal Avro Vulcan? And to hold it in the air....?

So, more modestly, I wanted to take inspiration from that....

Puis, j'ai vu cette photo et j'ai voulu essayer d'ajouter un hélicoptère.

Then I saw this photo and wanted to try adding a helicopter.

Mais finalement, avec l'hélico, ça faisait assez chargé....

But in the end, with the helicopter, it was quite busy....

Après quelques recherches, j'ai décidé de m'inspirer de ces différentes photos.

After some research, I decided to take inspiration from these different photos.

La première étape a été de faire un coulage du Harrier (sur un master du modèle plastique Mark 1) et un "coulage raté" (ce que curieusement j'ai très bien réalisé.....) pour faire une épave de Pucara (le master provenant du kit en résine Miniwing).

The first step was to make a casting of the Harrier (on a master of the Mark 1 plastic model) and a "failed casting" (which curiously I did very well.....) to make a Pucara wreck (the master from the Miniwing resin kit).

Et voici la configuration définitive du projet...

Un autre problème rencontré a été de définir les couleurs du Pucara, sachant que :

- pratiquement tous les Pucaras envoyé aux Malouines avaient des livrées différentes (même si le schéma était identique) sans compter ceux qui ont été repeints sur place avec "les moyens du bord"...

- les photos existantes n'aident pas trop à définir les couleurs, ainsi qu'il ressort des 3 photos ci-dessous du même avion, prises sous des angles et des luminosités différents...

Another problem encountered was to define the colors of the Pucara, knowing that:

- practically all the Pucaras sent to the Falklands had different liveries (even if the diagram was identical) without counting those which were repainted on site with "the means at hand"...

- the existing photos do not help too much to define the colors, as it appears from the 3 photos below of the same plane, taken under different angles and luminosity...

Finalement, j'ai choisi cet avion (d'autant que son immatriculation figure sur la planche de décals du kit Miniwing qui a servi de master).

Finally, I chose this plane (especially since its registration is on the decal sheet of the Miniwing kit which served as master).

Pour le Harrier, cela a été plus facile et je me suis inspiré de cette photo où on ne voit pas les immatriculations, ce qui me permet d'utiliser le modèle que j'ai fini dernièrement (voir ici).

For the Harrier, it was easier and I was inspired by this photo where you can't see the registrations, which allows me to use the model I finished recently (see here).

Etape deux : la base du diorama est prête pour la suite.

1/144 Dassault Super Etendard

Les réparés - Part 6

Successeur de l'Etendard IV (voir ici), le Super Etendard est un avion de chasse et d'attaque (pouvant être porteur d'un missile nucléaire) qui a eu son heure de gloire sous les couleurs argentines pendant la guerre des Malouines durant laquelle, associé au missile Exocet, il a coulé deux navires britanniques.

Initialement, le modèle réalisé par M. Chaubet au 1/144 était aux couleurs françaises mais, après son "accident" et les dégâts sur la peinture, comme je n'ai pas réussi à retrouver la couleur d'origine, je l'ai entièrement repeint aux couleurs de la marine argentine.

Pour la décoration, j'ai utilisé la planche de décalques Vector qui propose également des marquages français et irakiens.

Mais, pour le drapeau vertical et horizontal de queue, il a fallu manier le scalpel car la planche Vector ne comporte que des bandes blanches, pas très couvrantes.


The repaired - Part 6

Successor of the Etendard IV (see here), the Super Etendard is a fighter and attack aircraft (including carrying a nuclear missile) which had its heyday under the Argentine colors during the Falklands War, during which, associated with the Exocet missile, it sank two British ships.

Initially, the model made by Mr. Chaubet at 1/144 was in the French colors, but after his "accident" and damage to the painting, as I have not been able to find the original color, I completely repainted it in the colors of the Argentine navy.

For decoration, I used the Vector decal sheet which also offers French and Iraqi markings.

But for the vertical and horizontal tail flag, it was necessary to wield the scalpel because the Vector sheet has only white stripes, not very opaque.

1/144 Dassault Super Etendard - 2nda Escuadrilla Aeronaval de Caza y Attaque - Armada Argentina

1/144 Johnny Lightning : P-51, P-47, P-40, Corsair

Il y a quelques années, j'ai trouvé sur internet des ensembles de 2 avions sous blister, annoncés comme étant au 1/144 et en métal, de la marque Johnny Lightning Military Muscle.
Aventurier comme je suis, j'ai donc pris le risque d'en acheter deux sets :
- un P-40 Warhawk
- un P-47 Thunderbolt razorback
- un F4U Corsair,
- et un P-51 Mustang.
Ces modèles sont présentés sur un support, et ils n'ont donc pas de train d’atterrissage.
Ils sont bien conformes au 1/144, mais comme tous ces produits Diecast, la gravure est un peu importante.


A few years ago, I found on the web sets of two planes under blister, advertised as 1/144 and metal, of the brand Johnny Lightning Military Muscle.
Adventurous as I am, so I took the risk to buy two sets :
- a P-40 Warhawk
- a P-47 Thunderbolt razorback
- a F4U Corsair
-  and a P-51 Mustang.
These models are presented on a support, and they do not have landing gear.
They are conform to 1/144, but like all these products Diecast, engraving is a little high.

Pour le P-51, rien à dire pour la décoration qui est vraiment superbe.

For the P-51, nothing to say for decoration which is lovely.

Pour le P-47, j'ai juste complété la décoration du nez avec des décalques pour le mot "Dottie III".
Il a fallu poser lettre par lettre, sur les 2 côtés...


For the P-47, I just completed the decoration of the nose with decals for the word "Dottie III".
It took put letter by letter, on the two sides...

Le P-40 est pas mal, aux couleurs des Tigres Volants, mais je ne sais pas si je ne vais pas le redécorer.


The P-40 is not bad, in Flying Tigers markings, but I do not know if I'm not going to redecorate.

Curtiss P-40 Warhawk - 23 Fighter Group - Flying Tigers - USAAF

J'ai trouvé le Corsair très moche, et j'ai donc décidé de le repeindre complètement.


I found the Corsair really ugly, so I decided to repaint it completely.

Pour changer un peu des Corsair américains, anglais ou français, j'ai finalement choisi un avion de la marine argentine, grâce aux planches de décalques de Zotz (Roundels of the world).
Les planches sont au 1/72 mais on peut utiliser les petites décalques pour certains modèles au 1/144 à l'époque où les cocardes n'étaient pas "basse visibilité".


To change a bit of American, British or French Corsairs, I finally chose an aircraft of the Argentine Navy,  thanks to Zotz decals sheets (Roundels of the world).
The sheets are 1/72 but you can use small decals for some models to 1/144 at the time when cockades were not "low visibility".

1/144 Vought F4U Corsair - Armada Argentina

Je ne sais pas si cet insigne de la marine argentine est de la même époque que l'avion, mais je l'ai trouvé joli pour orner le socle.


I do not know if the badge of the Argentine navy is to the same time as the plane, but I found it nice to adorn the base.
