En attendant, le rappel d’un raid d’aviation oublié, qui a dû laisser des traces chez les penseurs de la chose militaire, au moins pour ceux capables d’envisager l’avenir de l’aviation autrement qu'en tant que force d’appui de l’armée de terre.

Après un premier raid aérien d’Italie à Rio de Janeiro en 1930-1931, Italo Balbo, passionné d’aviation, organisateur de la Regia Aeronautica, ministre de l’aviation, etc., a organisé et mené en 1933 un raid de 25 hydravions de Rome à Chicago où se tenait une exposition universelle.

Même si seulement 24 hydravions sont effectivement arrivés aux Etats-Unis, je vous laisse apprécier cette photographie d’une partie de ces appareils en vol à leur arrivée à Chicago.

Malgré l’excellent accueil reçu à Chicago et puis à New York sur lors du voyage de retour quant à la performance réalisée, est-ce que certains théoriciens n’ont pas fait le lien entre cette image d’un nombre aussi important d’avions en vol, après une telle traversée de l’Atlantique, et les théories de la guerre aérienne de Giulio Douhet, et plus particulièrement du bombardement stratégique ?

Despite the warm welcome received in Chicago and then New York during the return journey regarding the achieved performance, is what some theorists have not made the link between this image of important number planes flight after such a crossing of the Atlantic, and the air warfare theories of Giulio Douhet, especially strategic bombing ?

L’avion utilisé pour ce raid est le Savoia-Marchetti S.55, hydravion bimoteur avec deux coques, chacune d’elles servant pour le fret ou les passagers (5 par coque), l’équipage étant situé dans l’épaisseur de l’aile, juste devant le moteur, entre les deux coques.

Le modèle présenté ici, dans une version civile, fait partie des 2 ou 3 modèles au 1/144 de la série sur l’aviation italienne produite pour la Gazetta dello Sport (voir ici).


The aircraft used for this raid is the Savoia-Marchetti S.55, a twin engine seaplane with two hulls, each used for cargo or passengers (5 per case), the crew being located in the thickness of the wing, right in front of the engine, between the two hulls.

The model presented here, in a civilian version, is among the 2 or 3 models at 1/144 of the series on Italian aviation produced for Gazzetta dello Sport (see here).
