1/144 Fairey Gannet

Je ne voulais pas le faire.....

Dans le cadre d'une commande spéciale auprès de M. Chaubet d'un moule complet de modèles qu'il ne ferait jamais, figurait un Fairey Gannet (voir ici).

J'en ai déjà monté un (voir là) et je n'envisageais pas d'en faire un autre (absence de décalques intéressantes, problème de place dans la vitrine, etc).

Mais, j'ai vu (et pu commander...) un kit de Gannet réalisé par Foxone avec une planche de décalques non seulement intéressante mais qui correspondait à un projet qui commence à prendre forme.

Je me suis donc sacrifié pour faire un second Gannet....😂😂

I didn't want to do it...

As part of a special order placed with Mr Chaubet for a complete set of models that he would never make, there was a Fairey Gannet (see here).

I've already built one (see there) and had no intention of building another (no interesting decals, lack of space in the display case, etc.).

However, I saw (and was able to order...) a Gannet kit made by Foxone with a sheet of decals that was not only interesting but also matched a project that is beginning to take shape.

So I sacrificed myself to make a second Gannet...😂😂

Non, vous ne vous trompez pas... J'ai commencé par couper et plier les ailes....

Il faut dire que la manière dont les ailes des Gannet sont pliées est pour le moins originale.

Je n'ai toutefois fini le pliage et posé les bouts d'aile dans leur position repliée, qu'après avoir peint le modèle et y avoir posé les décalques.

Voici donc un Fairey Gannet, avec ses ailes repliées, lors de la dernière croisière de l'Ark Royal fin 1978.

No, you're not mistaken... I started by cutting and folding the wings...

It must be said that the way the Gannet's wings are folded is original, to say the least.

However, I only finished folding and placing the wing tips in their folded position after painting the model and applying the decals.

Here is a Fairey Gannet, with its wings folded, during the Ark Royal's final cruise at the end of 1978.

1/144 Mikoyan Gurevitch MiG 3 - by Newray

J'ai toujours trouvé que le MiG 3 était un bel avion et qu'il aurait sa place dans ma collection.

C'est pour ça que cherchant une base de qualité, j'ai acheté le kit en impression 3D produit par Sputnik 3D Labs, en prévoyant de le couler en métal.

I have always thought that the MiG 3 was a beautiful aircraft and that it would be a great addition to my collection.

That's why, looking for a high-quality base, I bought the 3D printing kit produced by Sputnik 3D Labs, planning to cast it in metal.

Puis, je me suis rappelé qu'il y a très longtemps, j'avais acheté un modèle en métal de ce même MiG 3, réalisé par Newray, annoncé au 1/140 mais dont l'échelle réelle est déterminée par la taille de la boîte....

C'est surement pour ça que je l'ai rangé sans même vérifier les mesures.

Then I remembered that a long time ago, I had bought a metal model of this same MiG 3, made by Newray, advertised as 1/140 scale but whose actual scale is determined by the size of the box....

That's probably why I put it away without even checking the measurements.

Mais avec ce kit de Sputnik 3D Labs, j'avais une base fiable de comparaison avec le modèle Newray.

Et le résultat a été plus que probant, puisque contrairement à ce que Newray annonce, son modèle n'est pas au 1/140 mais bien au 1/144.

La seule chose que j'ai du faire, c'est de repeindre les pipes d'échappement qui étaient de la même couleur que le fuselage..... 

Donc, après des années dans un placard, voici un MiG 3, en métal, au 1/144.

Je verrai si, un jour, j'utilise les pièces du kit 3D pour le présenter sur ses trains d'atterrissage.

But with this kit from Sputnik 3D Labs, I had a reliable basis for comparison with the Newray model.

And the result was more than convincing, since contrary to what Newray claims, its model is not 1/140 scale but 1/144 scale.

The only thing I had to do was repaint the exhaust pipes, which were the same colour as the fuselage...

So, after years in a cupboard, here is a 1/144 scale metal MiG 3.

I'll see if one day I use the parts from the 3D kit to display it on its landing gear.

1/144 Fairey Delta FD.2

Dans le cadre des recherches sur la technologie des ailes delta, et après des tests sur différentes maquettes, le fabricant d'avion Fairey Aviation a répondu à une demande du Ministère de l'Air britannique pour un avion à aile delta piloté à l'échelle réelle, donnant naissance au Fairey Delta 1, dont le premier vol est intervenu en mars 1951.

As part of research into delta wing technology, and after testing various scale models, aircraft manufacturer Fairey Aviation responded to a request from the British Air Ministry for a full-scale piloted delta wing aircraft, resulting in the Fairey Delta 1, which made its maiden flight in March 1951.

Puis, dans le cadre des recherches sur le comportement de l'aile delta à des hautes vitesses, la société Fairey a produit le Delta 2, dès le départ optimisé pour les vitesses supersoniques en tant qu'avion de chasse.

En raison de la priorité donnée au Gannet, le Fairey Delta 2 a pris du retard et n'a donc effectué son premier vol qu'en octobre 1954.

Ce n'est qu'en octobre 1955, après avoir subi un accident, qu'il a franchi le mur du son pour la première fois.

Et c'est en mars 1956, que le Delta 2 a établi un nouveau record du monde de vitesse en ligne droite, atteignant 1.822 km/h, et a franchi la barrière symbolique 1.000 miles par heure.

Then, as part of research into the behaviour of delta wings at high speeds, Fairey produced the Delta 2, which was optimised from the outset for supersonic speeds as a fighter aircraft.

Due to the priority given to the Gannet, the Fairey Delta 2 fell behind schedule and did not make its maiden flight until October 1954.

It was not until October 1955, after suffering an accident, that it broke the sound barrier for the first time.

And it was in March 1956 that the Delta 2 set a new world record for straight-line speed, reaching 1,822 km/h and breaking the symbolic 1,000 miles per hour barrier.

Une des particularités du Delta 2 est d'avoir un nez et un cockpit basculants selon un angle de 10°.

Cette particularité sera très utile quand le premier prototype, WG774, sera modifié avec des ailes gothiques ou ogivales, des entrées d'air déplacées, des trains d'atterrissage plus haut et un nez encore allongé, pour servir d'étude pour le Concorde, connu sous le nom de Bac 221.

Ce kit produit en résine par Anigrand, a été coulé en métal, puis monté et peint sans difficultés.

Voici donc, au 1/144, le premier prototype du Fairey Delta 2, avec parmi les dernières photos, son aspect après les modifications pour l'étude du Concorde.

One of the distinctive features of the Delta 2 is that its nose and cockpit tilt at an angle of 10°.

This feature would prove very useful when the first prototype, WG774, was modified with gothic or ogival wings, relocated air intakes, higher landing gear and an even longer nose, to serve as a study for the Concorde, known as Bac 221.

This kit, produced in resin by Anigrand, was cast in metal, then assembled and painted without difficulty.

Here, in 1/144 scale, is the first prototype of the Fairey Delta 2, with the latest photos showing its appearance after modifications for the Concorde study.

1/144 English Electric P.1A

Dans le cadre du développement de l'English Electric Lightning, et doutant de l'efficacité des innovations envisagées (deux turboréacteurs superposés, un empennage horizontal surélevé et une aile avec un bord d'attaque en flèche de 60°), le Royal Aircraft Establishment a fait demander à Short Brothers de créer un appareil expérimental, Short SB.5, pour tester des angles de flèche de 50 à 69 degrés ainsi que des positions hautes ou basses de l'empennage.

Les essais du Short SB.5 ayant confirmé les propositions d'English Electrique, la fabrication des deux premiers prototypes a pu continuer et le premier des deux a effectué son premier vol en 1954.

Le second prototype a volé en 1955 avec un réservoir de carburant installé dans une bosse sous le ventre.

As part of the development of the English Electric Lightning, and doubting the effectiveness of the planned innovations (two stacked turbojets, a raised horizontal tailplane and a wing with a 60° swept leading edge), the Royal Aircraft Establishment asked Short Brothers to create an experimental aircraft, the Short SB.5, to test sweep angles of 50 to 69 degrees as well as high and low tailplane positions.

The Short SB.5 trials confirmed English Electric's proposals, and production of the first two prototypes continued. The first of the two made its maiden flight in 1954.

The second prototype flew in 1955 with a fuel tank installed in a bulge under the fuselage.

L'English Electric P.1A a été produit au 1/144 par le fabricant 144th.co.uk avec l'immatriculation du second prototype, le WG763, et son réservoir additionnel.

Le coulage en métal s'est déroulé sans problème ainsi que le montage et la peinture, monochrome.

Le plus long a été la pose des décalques, avec une planche particulièrement fournie.

Et le plus difficile a été de trouver une photo du 2ème prototype avec son bidon supplémentaire (qui sera installé sur les dernières versions du Lightning).

The English Electric P.1A was produced in 1/144 scale by manufacturer 144th.co.uk with the registration number of the second prototype, WG763, and its additional fuel tank.

The metal casting went smoothly, as did the assembly and painting, which was monochrome.

The most time-consuming part was applying the decals, with a particularly extensive sheet.

And the hardest part was finding a photo of the second prototype with its extra fuel tank (which will be installed on the latest versions of the Lightning).
