1/144 North American B-25 Mitchell

Un modèle au 1/144 commandé à M. Chaubet uniquement monté et peint, que j’ai décoré aux couleurs d’un avion du 398th Bomber Squadron "Falcons" avec une planche de décalques de Superscale.

Ce modèle nécessite une mise au point concernant les couleurs du nose art, le faucon étant présenté parfois avec une tête verte et un nez jaune, d’autre fois avec une tête rouge et un nez blanc.

Après de nombreuses recherches et d’après les sites dédiés au 345th Bomber Group « Air Apaches » dont dépendait le 398th Bomber Squadron « Falcons », il semble que les deux types de décorations ont existé et que l’on peut expliquer la différence par :

•  le type d’avion, car on retrouve souvent la tête rouge et le nez blanc sur les B-25J, et celle avec la tête verte et le nez jaune sur les B-25D (reconnaissables à leur tourelle dorsale vers la queue) ou B-25G (sans poste de mitrailleur arrière) ou B-25-H (version la plus lourdement armée)

•  le théâtre d’opérations, car on retrouve la plupart des « green falcons » sur le front de Nouvelle Guinée, avec les marques blanches sur l’empennage.

A model at 1/144 ordered to Mr. Chaubet only assembled and painted, that I have decorated in the colors of an aircraft of 398th Bomber Squadron "Falcons" with a Superscale decals sheet.

This model requires a development about the colors of the nose art, the falcon being sometimes presented with a green head and a yellow nose, other times with a red head and white nose.

After extensive research and according to websites dedicated to the 345th Bomber Group "Air Apaches" whose 398th Bomber Squadron "Falcons" depended, it seems that the two types of decorations have existed and that the difference can be explained by :

•  the type of aircraft, because one often finds red head and white nose on B-25J, and the one with the green head and yellow nose on B-25D (recognizable by their dorsal turret towards the tail), or B-25G (without rear gunner position) or B-25-H (the more heavily armed version),

•  the theater of operations, because one finds the most of "green falcons" on the front of New Guinea, with white markings on the tail.

Bon, vous l’avez compris, rien n’est probant car on retrouve ce qui semble être une tête verte-nez jaune de faucon sur des B-25J (tourelle dorsale vers l’avant) et sur des autres versions du B-25 qui ne portent pas les marques blanches du théâtre d’opérations de Nouvelle Guinée.

Et en plus, il est possible que les décorations aient varié d'un flight à l'autre, comme d'un avion à l'autre ainsi qu'il ressort de la photo ci-dessous.

Well, you have understood, nothing is convincing because we find what appears to be a falcon green head-yellow nose on the B-25J (dorsal turret forward) and of other versions of the B-25 who do not wear the New Guinea white markings theater of operations.

And in addition, it is possible that the decorations have varied from one flight to another, as from one aircraft to another as appears from the photo below.

Alors, on va faire comme les enfants : « on dira que » et on va considérer que la tête rouge-nez blanc est bien conforme à un B-25J du 498th Bomber Squadron. Et en plus c’est joli.

La prochaine fois, je ferai le B-25 avec la chauve-souris, c'est moins casse-tête...

So we will do like the children : "one will say that" and we will consider that the red head-white nose is in conformity with a B-25J of the 498th Bomber Squadron. And in addition it's pretty.

Next time, I will do the B-25 with the bat, it's less brain teasing...
