1/144 Blackburn Buccaneer

 Le Blackburn Buccaneer a été initialement conçu comme avion embarqué d'attaque à basse altitude.

Le Buccaneer S.2, deuxième version de cet avion, a été équipé de moteur Rolls-Royce Spey, produisant une poussée 40 % supérieure au précédent moteur avec une consommation de carburant nettement inférieure et donc une meilleure autonomie.

Alors qu'elle avait choisi le BAC TSR.2 puis le General Dynamics F-111K, la RAF a été contrainte d'accepter le Buccaneer lors de l'annulation de ces deux programmes et de l'abandon de ses porte-avions par la Fleet Air Arm, dont elle a récupéré une partie de ses avions (et des missions).

Alors, quand le fabricant 144th.co.uk a produit le Buccaneer, je n'ai bien sûr pas réfléchi (comme d'habitude....) et j'en ai bien entendu acheté un, mais aussi un second avec la livrée première Guerre du Golfe.

Parmi la douzaine de Buccaneer ayant participé à ce conflit, le choix s'est arrêté sur le XW547 "The Guiness Girl"- "Pauline" - "Macallan" car c'est un des rares dont on a une photo alors qu'il était basé à Bahreïn pendant l'opération Granby (l'intervention britannique lors de la Guerre du Golfe).

En plus, on peut le voir facilement car il est aujourd'hui exposé au Musée de la RAF à Hendon.

The Blackburn Buccaneer was originally designed as a carrier-based low-altitude attack aircraft.

The Buccaneer S.2, the second version of this aircraft, was powered by a Rolls-Royce Spey engine, producing 40% more thrust than the previous engine, with significantly lower fuel consumption and thus a longer range.

Having chosen the BAC TSR.2 and then the General Dynamics F-111K, the RAF was forced to accept the Buccaneer when these two programs were cancelled and the Fleet Air Arm abandoned its aircraft carriers, recovering some of its aircraft (and missions).

So when the manufacturer 144th.co.uk produced the Buccaneer, I of course didn't think twice (as usual...) and of course bought one, but also a second with the first Gulf War livery.

Among the dozen Buccaneers that participated in this conflict, the choice fell on XW547 "The Guiness Girl" - "Pauline" - "Macallan" because it is one of the few of which we have a photo while it was based in Bahrain during Operation Granby (the British intervention during the Gulf War).

What's more, it's easy to see as it's now on display at the RAF Museum in Hendon.

Le coulage en métal du modèle s'est déroulé sans trop de difficultés, sauf que j'ai du refaire le fuselage car vu la taille du bébé, et donc le poids que ça représentait, il avait déformé le moule en silicone et était donc un peu trop gros.

Les phases de montage, de peinture et des décalques se sont déroulées sans problème.

The metal casting of the model went without too much difficulty, except that I had to redo the fuselage because, given the size of the baby, and therefore the weight it represented, it had deformed the silicone mold and was therefore a little too big.

The assembly, painting, and decaling phases went smoothly.

1/144 Chengdu (CAC) J-36

 Ce type d'avion présente deux difficultés :

- trouver une photo dont on est sûr qu'il s'agit d'un véritable avion et pas un truc créé par une IA ou un jeu de simulation,

- être sûr que le modèle corresponde au véritable avion dans les livrées, les dimensions etc..

Donc, en ce mois d'octobre 2025, vu le peu d'informations sur l'avion réel, je ne sais pas du tout si le modèle de J-36 présenté est vrai, exact dans ses formes, livrées et dimension.

En décembre 2024, des photos et des vidéos en ligne ont montré le vol d'un prototype d'avion à Chengdu, siège de la Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC) sous la forme d'une aile volante sans queue à 3 réacteurs, portant le numéro de code « 36 » sur le fuselage avant, raison pour laquelle il a été provisoirement nommé J-36 par les observateurs.

En mars 2025, de nouvelles images et vidéos sur les réseaux sociaux chinois ont fourni des détails supplémentaires sur la configuration triréacteur, une entrée d'air dorsale, une verrière profilée du cockpit etc.

This type of aircraft presents two challenges:

- finding a photo that you can be sure is a real aircraft and not something created by an AI or a simulation game,

- being sure that the model matches the real aircraft in terms of livery, dimensions, etc.

So, in this month of October 2025, given the limited information on the real aircraft, I have no idea if the J-36 model presented is true, accurate in its shape, livery, and dimensions.

In December 2024, online photos and videos showed the flight of a prototype aircraft at Chengdu, home of the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC), in the form of a tailless, three-engine flying wing, bearing the code number "36" on the forward fuselage, which is why observers provisionally named it the J-36.

In March 2025, new images and videos on Chinese social media provided additional details on the trijet configuration, a dorsal air intake, a streamlined cockpit canopy, and more.

Un des responsables de l'armée de l'air chinoise (PLAAF), a précisé aux médias d'État que le J-36 est l un avion de « sixième génération » mais les avis divergent quant à son rôle : chasseur de supériorité aérienne, chasseur lourd , chasseur-bombardier, bombardier, etc, ou enfin plate-forme de lancement pour missiles à longue portée,  centre de commandement et de contrôle pour aéronefs sans pilote, le  classant ainsi dans la catégorie de « croiseur aéroporté ».

Donc, sujet à suivre.

En attendant, je n'ai pas pu résister lorsque j'ai vu ce modèle disponible, ne serait-ce qu'en raison de sa forme et de sa taille.

L'avenir dira si le modèle est conforme à l'original....

A Chinese Air Force (PLAAF) official told state media that the J-36 is a "sixth generation" aircraft, but opinions differ as to its role: air superiority fighter, heavy fighter, fighter-bomber, bomber, etc., or finally a launch platform for long-range missiles, command and control center for unmanned aircraft, thus classifying it in the "airborne cruiser" category.

So, a story to follow.

In the meantime, I couldn't resist when I saw this model available, if only because of its shape and size.

Time will tell if the model is true to the original...

1/144 Boeing HC.1 Chinook

Il y a quelques années, j'ai présenté un modèle en métal de CH-47 Chinook dans sa version britannique, provenant du fabricant de jouets Maisto, et dont les dimensions correspondaient à très peu de choses près à un modèle au 1/144 (voir ici).

Mais après ces vérifications de dimensions, j'ai eu l'occasion d'en acheter un second, qui est resté près d'une dizaine d'années dans la réserve....

Depuis l'achat, j'avais l'idée de le décorer aux couleurs d'un hélicoptère de la Guerre du Golfe, enfin, la première, puisque elles sont numérotées.....

Néanmoins j'hésitais, car les livrées n'étaient pas des plus originales...., même s'il y en avait une que je trouvais très attrayante mais que je considérais au delà de mes capacités de peintre....

Jusqu'à ces derniers jours.

Le seul problème a été de bien différencier le camouflage apparaissant sur de nombreuses photos de l'hélicoptère après le retour en Grande Bretagne, modifié notamment pour l'emplacement des codes d'appareil, par rapport à celui initial porté pendant la Guerre du Golf et qui ne figure que sur très peu de photos.

Sur l'hélicoptère lui-même, je n'ai modifié que les trains d'atterrissage comme le premier et jai changé les moteurs pour en mettre avec les filtres à sable provenant de Retrokit.

Voici donc le Boeing Chinook HC.1 immatriculé ZA712 et sa livrée pour le moins singulière, et tout sauf chatoyante..

A few years ago, I presented a metal model of the British version of the CH-47 Chinook, from the toy manufacturer Maisto, whose dimensions corresponded very closely to a 1/144 model (see here).

But after these dimensional checks, I had the opportunity to buy a second one, which remained in stash for nearly ten years....

Since buying it, I'd been thinking of decorating it with the colors of a Gulf War helicopter, or rather, the first one, since they're numbered.....

However I was hesitant, because the liveries were not the most original..., although there was one that I found very attractive but which I considered beyond my painting abilities....

Until these last few days.

The only problem was to differentiate the camouflage appearing on many photos of the helicopter after its return to Great Britain, modified in particular for the location of the aircraft codes, from the initial camouflage worn during the Gulf War, which appears on only very few photos.

On the helicopter itself, I only modified the landing gear like the first one and changed the engines to put them with the sand filters from Retrokit.

Here is the Boeing Chinook HC.1 registered ZA712 and its livery, which is, to say the least, unusual and anything but shimmering.

1/144 Nakajima Ki-11

Dans les années 30, les forces militaires japonaises recherchaient un avion pour équiper à la fois l'armée et la marine japonaises.

Les firmes Kawasaki, Mitsubishi, et Nakajima ont proposé, pour la première, un biplan dénommé Ki-10, pour la seconde le monoplan Ki-14 (en fait une version terrestre du chasseur de la marine A5M) et la troisième, également un monoplan, le Ki-11.

Le Nakajima Ki-11 ressemblait beaucoup au chasseur américain Boeing P-26 Peashooter, mais sans les qualités de ce dernier car il accusait une instabilité permanente et une fragilité du train d’atterrissage caréné.

Au final, c'est le Kawasaki Ki-10 qui sortit vainqueur de la compétition avec une commande en série de ce biplan.

Mais malgré le rejet par les autorités militaires, le Nakajima Ki-11 donna "naissance" au chasseur Ki-27 "Nate".

Un des quatre prototypes du Nakajima Ki-11 fut revendu au journal Asahi Shinbun et utilisé jusqu'en 1943 pour des missions de liaison, de transport postal rapide, mais aussi des vols de reconnaissance et de collecte d'informations...

C'est la livrée que j'ai choisie après avoir coulé le modèle en métal sur la base du kit en résine de A&W (vendu sur le nouveau site d'Anigrand) et en utilisant un reste de décalques de MYK Design Decals.

In the 1930s, the Japanese military was looking for an aircraft to equip both the Japanese army and navy.

Kawasaki, Mitsubishi, and Nakajima proposed the first, a biplane called the Ki-10, the second, the Ki-14 monoplane (actually a land-based version of the Navy's A5M fighter), and the third, also a monoplane, the Ki-11.

The Nakajima Ki-11 closely resembled the American Boeing P-26 Peashooter fighter, but lacked the latter's strengths, as it suffered from constant instability and a fragile streamlined landing gear.

Ultimately, the Kawasaki Ki-10 emerged victorious in the competition, securing a production order for this biplane.

Despite its rejection by the military authorities, the Nakajima Ki-11 led to the "creation" of the Ki-27 "Nate" fighter.

One of the four Nakajima Ki-11 prototypes was sold to the Asahi Shinbun newspaper and used until 1943 for liaison missions, rapid mail transport, as well as reconnaissance and intelligence gathering flights.

This is the livery I chose after casting the metal model based on the A&W resin kit (sold on the new Anigrand website) and using leftover decals from MYK Design Decals.

1/144 Snow Cruiser - Part 2

Après la présentation de ce véhicule original qu'est le Snow Cruiser (voir ici), voici le modèle en résine au 1/144.

Après avoir passé des années au fond d'un placard, j'ai commencé à y travailler, puis je l'ai laissé, pour le reprendre plus tard, et le laisser à nouveau jusqu'au début de l'été où j'y ai travaillé sérieusement.....

Si le montage n'était pas compliqué s'agissant d'un modèle monobloc, le seul problème était de trouver la bonne couleur rouge pour représenter ce véhicule destiné à l'Antarctique. 

Les décalques se posent sans problème, mais il a fallu bien vérifier leur emplacement sur des photos d'époque.

La boîte combo (avec le Staggerwing) prévoit la possibilité de monter l'avion sur le Snow Cruiser, mais en réalité cette situation ne s'est jamais présentée à cause du poids du véhicule, de son incapacité à circuler autrement qu'en marche arrière et de monter des pentes à 35%....

Voici quelques photos brutes, avec un personnage (pour donner une idée de la taille) sensé représenter un policier ayant escorté le Snow Cruiser pendant son voyage entre Chicago et Boston.

Following the presentation of this original vehicle, the Snow Cruiser (see here), now is the 1/144 resin model.

After spending years at the bottom of a closet, I started working on it, then left it, only to pick it up again later, and leave it again until the beginning of summer when I worked on it seriously.....

While the assembly wasn't complicated given the one-piece model, the only problem was finding the right red color to represent this vehicle destined for the Antarctic. 

The decals fit without any problem, but their placement had to be carefully checked against period photos.

The combo box (with the Staggerwing) provides for the possibility of mounting the aircraft on the Snow Cruiser, but in reality this situation never arose due to the weight of the vehicle, its inability to move other than in reverse and to climb slopes of 35%....

Here, some raw photos, with a figure (to give an idea of ​​the size) supposed to represent a police officer who escorted the Snow Cruiser during its trip between Chicago and Boston.

Vous avez peut être remarqué que le Snow Cruiser est un peu "sali" avec de la neige...., pour être dans le ton de son utilisation en Antarctique.

Mais, comment rendre cet effet "Antarctique" plus marqué ?

Peut-être avec une base enneigée ?

Mais aussi avec un élément plus marqué ?

Peut-être quelque chose basé sur cette photo ?

Alors, bien sûr, comme je suis Corse, donc compatriote de Napoléon, j'ai choisi un empereur pour accompagner le Snow Cruiser, même s'il ne s'agit que d'un manchot empereur.....

You may have noticed that the Snow Cruiser is a little "dirty" with snow... to match its Antarctic use.

But how can we make this "Antarctic" effect more pronounced ?

Perhaps with a snowy base ?

But also with a more pronounced element ?

Maybe something based on this photo ?

So, of course, as I am Corsican, and therefore a compatriot of Napoleon, I chose an emperor to accompany the Snow Cruiser, even if it is only an emperor penguin.....

Bon, il ne faut pas être très regardant, mon maquettisme animalier a besoin d'encore beaucoup de travail.....

1/144 Snow Cruiser - Part 1

Au retour de l'expédition en Antarctique de 1934 en tant que second de l'Amiral Byrd, le scientifique (physicien, chimiste, mathématicien) Thomas Poulter a conçu le Snow Cruiser, un véhicule destiné à permettre le voyage aller-retour au pôle Sud de scientifiques, pendant une durée de 12 mois environ, dans les conditions météorologiques difficiles du continent austral.

Ce véhicule 17 m de long et 4,6 m de large, pesait 30 tonnes et était conçu pour accueillir quatre à cinq personnes pendant un an avec toute leur nourriture, leur carburant et leur équipement, comportant une cuisine, un atelier d'usinage, une chambre noire et une salle radio.

Upon returning from the 1934 Antarctic expedition as Admiral Byrd's second in command, scientist (physicist, chemist, mathematician) Thomas Poulter designed the Snow Cruiser, a vehicle designed to enable scientists to travel to the South Pole and back, over a period of approximately 12 months, in the harsh weather conditions of the southern continent.

This vehicle, 17 m long and 4.6 m wide, weighed 20 tonnes and was designed to accommodate four to five people for a year with all their food, fuel and equipment, including a kitchen, a machine shop, a darkroom and a radio room.

Les roues pesaient chacune 318 kgs et faisaient 3 mètres de diamètre.

The wheels each weighed 318 kg and were 3 meters in diameter.

Construit près de Chicago, le Snow Cruiser a du traverser une bonne partie des Etats-Unis pour rejoindre Boston, à près de 1.000 miles ou 1.600 kilomètres, ce qui a attiré une foule immense.

Built near Chicago, the Snow Cruiser had to cross a large part of the United States to reach Boston, nearly 1,000 miles or 1,600 kilometers away, which attracted a huge crowd.

Après ce voyage de près d'un mois, le Snow Cruiser a été chargé (en démontant environ 1,50 mètres du compartiment arrière) sur le navire des Gardes Côtes North Star à destination de la base Little America en Antarctique, atteinte en janvier 1940.

After this nearly month-long voyage, the Snow Cruiser was loaded (dismantling about 1.50 meters of the aft compartment) onto the Coast Guard ship North Star bound for the Little America base in Antarctica, reached in January 1940.

Lors du déchargement du Snow Cruiser du navire jusqu'à la glace, la rampe construite de 24 mètres de long servant de pont s'est brisée sous le poids des 34 tonnes du véhicule, lequel a pu arriver sur la "glace ferme" que grace au réflexe du Dr Poulter qui a accéléré.

While unloading the Snow Cruiser from the ship onto the ice, the 24-meter-long ramp that served as a bridge broke under the weight of the 34-ton vehicle, which was only able to reach the "firm ice" thanks to Dr. Poulter's reflexes, who accelerated.

Mais le Snow Cruiser n'a pas tenu ses promesses car trop lourd, ses pneus lisses s'enfonçaient de près d'1 mètre dans la neige, et le véhicule n'arrivait pas à gravir certaines pentes alors qu'il avait été spécialement conçu pour ça.

Le trajet le plus long a été de 148 km entièrement en marche arrière, après qu'il ait été constaté que les pneus produisaient une meilleure traction en arrière.

But the Snow Cruiser didn't live up to its promises because it was too heavy, its slick tires sank nearly a meter into the snow, and the vehicle couldn't climb certain slopes despite being specifically designed for them.

The longest trip was 148 km entirely in reverse, after it was discovered that the tires provided better traction in reverse.

Le Snow Cruiser a été abandonné à la base de Little America le 22 décembre 1940, juste avant le début de la guerre contre le Japon.

En décembre 1946, l'Amiral Byrd a organisé une nouvelle expédition en Antarctique lors de laquelle une équipe a retrouvé le véhicule qui ne nécessitait qu'un regonflage des pneus et un simple entretien pour le rendre opérationnel, mais il n'a pas repris le service car dépassé par les véhicules à chenille apparus pendant la 2e guerre mondiale et plus performants.

Lors d'une nouvelle expédition en 1958, le Snow Cruiser a été retrouvé sous 7 mètres de neige mais après, il n'a pas été retrouvé, sans doute au fond de l'océan Austral ou enfoui profondément sous la neige et la glace.

The Snow Cruiser was abandoned at the Little America base on December 22, 1940, just before the outbreak of war against Japan.

In December 1946, Admiral Byrd organized a new expedition to Antarctica, during which a team recovered the vehicle, which required only tire inflation and simple maintenance to make it operational. However, it was not returned to service, having been overtaken by the more efficient tracked vehicles that appeared during World War II.

During a further expedition in 1958, the Snow Cruiser was found under 7 meters of snow, but it was not found afterward, probably at the bottom of the Southern Ocean or buried deep under snow and ice.

Alors, vous l'avez compris, le prochain post portera sur la maquette de ce véhicule énorme, produit en résine au 1/144 par BS Design qui proposait il y a quelques années, soit le véhicule seul, soit un combo avec en plus le Beech Staggerwing (que je vous présenterai dès que je l'aurai fini, mais pas avec le Snow Cruiser car compte tenu de l'impossibilité de se mouvoir, le véhicule n'a jamais porté l'avion).
