1/144 Douglas C-54 (DC-4) Skymaster

Cela doit bien faire une dizaine d'années que j'ai pensé à réaliser cet avion aux couleurs de la compagnie aérienne Civil Air Transport.

Cela fait donc depuis 10 ans environ que j'ai acheté la planche Minicraft de décalques de cet avion aux couleurs de cette compagnie.

It must be about ten years since I first thought of building this aeroplane in the colours of the Civil Air Transport airline.

So it's been about ten years since I bought the Minicraft decal sheet for this aeroplane in the colours of that airline.

Sauf que, comme souvent, j'ai acheté cette planche sans réfléchir et donc, ce n'est qu'après l'achat que j'ai vu qu'elle était destinée à un Douglas DC-6 et pas un DC-4 que j'envisageais de faire (d'autant que seul le DC-4 existait chez les fabricants de modèles finis comme Altaya-Ixo).

Et vu la taille, je ne m'imaginais pas essayer de le couler moi-même en métal.....

Vous comprenez mieux le temps qu'il m'a fallu pour commencer ce modèle et en particulier pour adapter les décalques du DC-6 au DC-4....

Alors, pourquoi ce "caprice" à vouloir ne faire que cette livrée de la CAT, la Civil Air Transport...?

D'une part, cette livrée est des plus originales avec ce dragon doré sur le fuselage et d'autre part, la CAT est une compagnie d'aviation créée par Claire Lee Chennault, le commandant des Tigres Volants, l'escadrille de volontaires américains intervenus en Chine pour combattre les japonais avant Pearl Harbor.

Mais aussi, et surtout...., après s'être réfugiée à Taiwan suite à la défaite des forces de Tchang Kaï-chek en Chine continentale, la CAT a rencontré des difficultés financières et a été reprise par la CIA pour effectuer, en plus des vols passagers, des missions secrètes dans tout le Sud Est Asiatique.

La CAT deviendra quelques années plus tard, la compagnie Air America, beaucoup plus célèbre..., appartenant toujours à la CIA.

Except that, as is often the case, I bought this sheet without thinking, and it's only after the purchase I realised that it was intended for a Douglas DC-6 and not a DC-4 which I had planned to build (especially since only the DC-4 was available from finished model manufacturers such as Altaya-Ixo).

And given the size, I couldn't imagine trying to cast it myself in metal...

You can better understand how long it took me to start this model and, in particular, to adapt the decals from the DC-6 to the DC-4....

So why this ‘whim’ of wanting to do only this livery for CAT, Civil Air Transport...?

On the one hand, this livery is highly original with its golden dragon on the fuselage, and on the other hand, CAT is an aviation company created by Claire Lee Chennault, commander of the Flying Tigers, the squadron of American volunteers who intervened in China to fight the Japanese before Pearl Harbour.

But also, and above all... after taking refuge in Taiwan following the defeat of Chiang Kai-shek's forces in mainland China, CAT encountered financial difficulties and was taken over by the CIA to carry out secret missions throughout Southeast Asia, in addition to passenger flights.

A few years later, CAT became Air America, a much more famous company, still owned by the CIA.

Les différences les plus visibles entre un DC-6 et un DC-4 sont la longueur de l'avion, et la forme des hublots : carrés pour le 6 et ovales pour le 4.

Donc, il a fallu en premier lieu jouer du ciseau pour adapter les bandes du fuselage à la longueur du DC-4, plus court.....

Et en second lieu, il a fallu reprendre la peinture de cette bande, d'abord pour masquer les hublots carrés et ensuite, parce que la couleur de la décalcomanie était un peu trop rose par rapport aux photos du véritable avion...

Et repeindre sans déborder des lignes, dorée en haut et noire et rouge en bas, de la bande de fuselage.

Et enfin, poser des décalques d'une autre planche de DC-4 avec les hublots ovales, ainsi que les portes etc...., puis refaire les chiffres d'immatriculation, beaucoup plus grands sur et sous les ailes par rapport au DC-6 et à la planche de decals de Minicraft.

Une dernière chose : j'ai choisi de ne pas faire une livrée immaculée, d'abord pour tenir compte des conditions météos dans le Sud-Est asiatique et ensuite, car les avions de la CAT, tout au moins au début, provenaient des surplus militaires comme ce DC-4, en réalité un C-54 Skymaster.

Et donc, après dix ans, puis la tension pour la peinture des bandes du fuselage et l'application des «vieilles» décalcomanies qui ont à peine cassé..., voici un DC-4 aux couleurs de Civil Air Transport, le prédécesseur d'Air America.

The most noticeable differences between a DC-6 and a DC-4 are the length of the aircraft and shape of the windows : square for the 6 and oval for the 4.

So, first I had to use scissors to adapt the fuselage strips to the shorter length of the DC-4...

Secondly, it was necessary to repaint this strip, first to mask the square windows and secondly because the colour of the decal was a little too pink compared to photos of the real aircraft...

And repaint without going over the lines, gold at the top and black and red at the bottom, of the fuselage strip.

Finally, apply decals from another DC-4 sheet with oval windows, doors, etc., then redo the registration numbers, which are much larger on and under the wings compared to the DC-6 and the Minicraft decal sheet.

One last thing: I chose not to make the livery immaculate, firstly to take into account weather conditions in South-East Asia and secondly, because CAT aircraft, at least in the beginning, came from military surplus, such as this DC-4, which was actually a C-54 Skymaster.

And so, after ten years, then the tension of painting the fuselage stripes and applying the ‘old’ decals that were barely broken..., here is a DC-4 in the colours of Civil Air Transport, the predecessor of Air America.

1/144 Bell HUL-1 Ranger (47J)

Le Bell 47J est un hélicoptère quadriplace avec fuselage entièrement caréné, dernière évolution du Bell 47 construit à plus de 5000 exemplaires, et plus connu sous son nom militaire Bell H-13 Sioux, notamment grâce au film MASH.

Le modèle a été coulé en métal à partir du kit de LF Models, et le montage et la peinture se sont passés sans problèmes.

La livrée choisie est celle d'un hélicoptère de l'US Navy affecté sur le brise-glace USS Atka pendant la première opération Deep Freeze en Antarctique.

The Bell 47J Ranger is a four-seater helicopter with a fully faired fuselage, the latest evolution of the Bell 47 of which more than 5000 were built, and better known by its military name Bell H-13 Sioux, notably thanks to the film MASH.

The model was cast in metal from the LF Models kit, and assembly and painting went smoothly.

The chosen livery is that of a US Navy helicopter assigned to the icebreaker USS Atka during the first Deep Freeze operation in Antarctica.

La frénésie de Noël s'annonce, d'autant que M. Chaubet est en train de finir une série de nouveaux modèles....

Alors, un petit quiz pour essayer de savoir quels sont ces nouveaux modèles....?

Voici une photo du nouveau moule (attention, à gauche au millieu, il y a un Bearcat que M. Chaubet a décidé de refaire, mais il n'est pas concerné par le quiz).

Et comme je suis très gentil, une petite précision : il s'agit uniquement d'avions français.

The Christmas frenzy is on its way, especially since Mr. Chaubet is currently finishing a series of new models....

So, a little quiz to try and figure out what these new models are...?

Here's a photo of the new mold (note that on the left in the middle, there's a Bearcat that Mr. Chaubet has decided to remake, but it's not relevant to the quiz).

And because I'm feeling generous, a small clarification : these are only French aircraft.
