1/144 RAF Akrotiri - Part 1

Le livre  “Wheels of the RAF” de Bruce Robertson est une mine d’informations sur les GSE (Ground Service Equiment), c’est à dire les véhicules d’accompagnement pour avions.

The book “Wheels of the RAF” by Bruce Robertson is a wealth of information on GSE (Ground Service Equipment), i.e. aircraft support vehicles.

Mais pas seulement... 

Chaque fois que j’ai ouvert ce livre, j’ai admiré la photo de la seconde page de couverture et j’ai rêvé d’un diorama comme ça....

Mais ce rêve s’est heurté au manque de véhicules de piste au 1/144 et mes connaissances limitées en la matière.

J’ai pu régler ce premier problème grâce aux informations “pointues” de Ray Rimes, le fabricant de véhicules en 3D (voir son site ici) qui m’a bien aidé pour reconnaître les différents types de camions sur la photo, et il m’a même fourni des véhicules qu’il ne commercialisait pas encore.

Pour un véhicule particulier, il a quand même fallu faire du bricolage....

Pour les véhicules et leur couleur, j’ai aussi bien été aidé par des membres du forum Britmodeller, même si pour certains véhicules j’en ai fait qu’à ma tête...

But this dream ran into the lack of 1/144 service vehicles and my limited knowledge on the subject.

I was able to solve this first problem thanks to the “in-depth” information from Ray Rimes, the manufacturer of 3D vehicles (see his site here) who helped me a lot to recognize the different types of trucks in the photo, and he even provided me with vehicles that he did not yet market.

For one particular vehicle, I still had to do some DIY....

For the vehicles and their color, I was also helped a lot by members of the Britmodeller forum, even if for some vehicles I did as I pleased...

1- Ground Power Unit (GPU) 60 Kva

On le voit à peine en bas à droite de la photo principale ci-dessus.

Il a donc fallu essayer de déterminer son type.

Dans la première photo, on le voit sous le fuselage de l'avion, et mieux sur celle avec un Buccaneer même s'il était habituellement utilisé avec des avions plus grands.

It is barely visible at the bottom right of the main photo above.

So we had to try to determine its type.

In the first photo it is seen under the fuselage of the plane, and better in the one with a Buccaneer even though it was usually used with larger planes.

2- Bedford TL Air Cargo

Ray Rimes avait précédemment produit la partie cargo qui se soulève, mais avec un autre type de camion.

Il a eu la gentillesse de réaliser le Bedford TL que l'on voit sur la photo ci-dessous, à droite.

Ray Rimes had previously produced the lifting cargo part, but with a different type of truck.

He was kind enough to make the Bedford TL pictured below, right.

3- Douglas Turbo Taskmaster

Encore un modèle que Ray Rimes n'avait pas à son catalogue et qu'il a gentiment réalisé.

Another model that Ray Rimes didn't have in his catalog and that he kindly made.

Pour l’escalier, un peu de bricolage à partir de celui de Braz Models car celui de Ray Rimmes était motorisé et ne convenait pas par rapport à la photo et l’époque.

For the staircase, a bit of DIY from the one from Braz Models because the one from Ray Rimmes was motorized and was not suitable in relation to the photo and the period.

7- Camion citerne d'eau potable Bedford RL de 600 gallons - 600 gallon drinking water tanker Bedford RL

8 - Camion à miel - Honey wagon

Ce petit nom délicat pour le camion de vidange des réservoirs d'eaux usées....

Je n'ai pas de photo d'origine, car j'ai choisi ce qu'avait Ray Rimes, à savoir un Leyland, sans doute pas utilisé par la RAF, mais le réservoir est conforme.

This delicate little name for the sewage tank emptying truck....

I don't have an original photo, as I chose what Ray Rimes had, which was a Leyland, probably not used by the RAF, but the tank is correct.

Mais le plus difficile a été le Condec.

Non, ce n'est pas un monstre, même si....

1/144 Caudron Goéland

Voici un autre Caudron Goéland, avion de transport et d'entrainement, qui porte les nouvelles cocardes françaises à la suite de la fusion entre les Forces Françaises Libres et celles du Gouvernement de Vichy après l'opération Torch, le débarquement en Afrique du Nord en 1942.

Ces "nouvelles" cocardes françaises sont les mêmes qu'au début de la guerre comportant un bleu profond au centre mais avec un liseré jaune autour.

C'est la partie décalques qui a été la plus difficile à réaliser et la seule que j'ai faite..., puisque j'avais commandé ce modèle à M. Chaubet, tout monté et peint.

Mais pourquoi ? Pourquoi un autre Goléand, tout camouflé et qui, il faut l'avouer, peut paraître comme sans trop d'intérêt....?

Eh bien, réponse sur la dernière photo.....

Here is another Caudron Goéland, a transport and training aircraft, which carries the new French roundels following the merger between the Free French Forces and those of the Vichy Government after Operation Torch, the landing in North Africa in 1942.

These "new" French roundels are the same as at the beginning of the war with a deep blue in the center but with a yellow border around it.

It is the decals part that was the most difficult to make and the only one I did..., since I had ordered this model from Mr. Chaubet, all assembled and painted.

But why? Why another Goléand, all camouflaged and which, it must be admitted, can seem like it is not very interesting....?

Well, the answer is in the last photo.....

Vous le reconnaissez derrière le Recce Squad du 2ème Derbyshire Yeomanry (ou du 1er ?), vraisemblablement sur l'aéroport de Tunis (Tunisie) avant un défilé ?

Il me manque juste à définir les camouflages des véhicules car j'ai des infos contradictoires...

Do you recognize him behind the Recce Squad of the 2nd Derbyshire Yeomanry (or the 1st ?), probably at Tunis airport (Tunisia) before a parade?

I just need to define the vehicle camouflages because I have contradictory information...

1/144 General Dynamics F-16XL - by S14 Aviation Fighters Series

Quand je suis allé récupérer le Grumman E-2C Hawkeye 2000 au magasin Toymax, à Hong Kong, je me suis aperçu que ce revendeur avait de nombreux modèles de la marque S14.

Il m'a présenté notamment quelques hélicos Blackhawk, avant que ma chère et tendre me fasse remarquer qu'ils étaient au 1/100, nouvelle échelle développée par S14.

Comme je ne pouvais pas rester sur une telle déconvenue...., je me suis intéressé à un F-16XL que j'avais repéré depuis plusieurs mois sur Internet.

Ce modèle avait l'avantage d'être visuellement très différent du F-16 "classique", et avoir l'impression d'en avoir un plus original....

When I went to pick up the Grumman E-2C Hawkeye 2000 at the Toymax store in Hong Kong, I noticed that this dealer had many models of the S14 brand.

He showed me some Blackhawk helicopters in particular, before my dear and tender pointed out to me that they were 1/100, a new scale developed by S14.

As I could not remain on such a disappointment..., I was interested in an F-16XL that I had spotted for several months on the Internet.

This model had the advantage of being visually very different from the "classic" F-16, and having the impression of having a more original one....

Dans le cadre du lancement par l'USAF, en 1981, du programme Enhanced Tactical Fighter (ETF) pour remplacer le F-111 Aardvark, c'est à dire un avion capable de missions d'interdiction en profondeur sans besoin d'escortes de chasseurs ou de brouillage, General Dynamics a proposé le F-16XL, prototype dérivé du F-16 Fighting Falcon, mais avec une aile delta à flèche coudée 115 % plus grande que l'aile d'origine, un fuselage allongé de 140 cm et diverses autres modifications générant un poids supplémentaire de 1 900 kg pour le premier prototype.

As part of the USAF's 1981 launch of the Enhanced Tactical Fighter (ETF) program to replace the F-111 Aardvark, i.e. an aircraft capable of deep interdiction missions without the need for fighter escorts or jamming, General Dynamics proposed the F-16XL, a prototype derived from the F-16 Fighting Falcon, but with a 115% larger swept delta wing than the original wing, a 55-inch (140 cm) longer fuselage, and various other modifications resulting in an additional 4,200 pounds (1,900 kg) of weight for the first prototype.

Si le F-16XL pouvait transporter deux fois plus de munitions et les livrer 50 % plus loin que son prédécesseur, les nombreuses différences structurelles et aérodynamiques par rapport au F-16 original auraient nécessité beaucoup plus d'efforts, de temps et d'argent pour être mis en production.

Ainsi, c'est le F-15E qui a remporté la compétition Enhanced Tactical Fighter (ETF) car il nécessitait très peu de modifications par rapport à sa base F-15B ou D, et bénéficiait du fait d'avoir 2 moteurs, plus sécurisant en cas de panne de l'un d'eux.

En 1988, les deux prototypes F-16XL furent confiés à la NASA pour des recherches sur le flux laminaire supersonique dans le cadre du programme de transport civil à grande vitesse (HSCT), le F-16XL étant considéré idéal pour ces tests en raison de son aile en flèche coudée et de ses capacités à haute vitesse et à haute altitude.

Voici donc le 1er prototype du F-16XL, même si sa numérotation 75-0749 est plus élevée que le second prototype 75-0747, dans sa livrée à l'époque de la compétition ETF.

While the F-16XL could carry twice as much munitions and deliver them 50% further than its predecessor, the many structural and aerodynamic differences from the original F-16 would have required much more effort, time, and money to put into production.

Thus, it was the F-15E that won the Enhanced Tactical Fighter (ETF) competition because it required very few modifications compared to its F-15B or D base, and benefited from having two engines, which was safer in the event of a failure of one of them.

In 1988, both F-16XL prototypes were turned over to NASA for supersonic laminar flow research as part of the High-Speed ​​Civil Transport (HSCT) program, with the F-16XL being considered ideal for such testing due to its swept wing and high-speed, high-altitude capabilities.

1/144 Grumman E-2C Hawkeye 2000 - by S14 Aviation Fighters Series

Depuis que j'ai découvert la marque japonaise S14 Aviation Fighters Series, j'ai régulièrement acheté un modèle de chaque série produite, et même tous d'une même série comme pour les hélicoptères Sikorsky H-53E (voir ici tous mes modèles S14).

Alors, quand j'ai vu en 2018 que S14 allait produire des Grumman Hawkeye, j'ai bien entendu pisté leur sortie sur leur site, mais sans succès jusqu'à que je me rende compte fin 2023 que ces Hawkeye étaient disponibles sur certains sites japonais Ebay ou Amazon, mais toujours pas sur celui du fabricant (qui m'a expliqué qu'il ne fournissait pas ces enseignes...).

Allez comprendre....

Since I discovered the Japanese brand S14 Aviation Fighters Series, I have regularly purchased a model from each series produced, and even all from the same series as for the Sikorsky H-53E helicopters (see here all my S14 models).

So, when I saw in 2018 that S14 was going to produce Grumman Hawkeyes, I of course tracked their release on their site, but without success until I realized at the end of 2023 that these Hawkeyes were available on some Japanese Ebay or Amazon sites, but still not on the manufacturer's (who explained to me that he did not supply these brands...). 

Go figure...

Quand j'ai commencé à préparer mon voyage dans les 3 cités de Singapour, Taipei et Hong Kong, je me suis aperçu que dans cette dernière ville, les Hawkeyes étaient vendus par Toymax, un magasin que je connaissais bien et donc, je me suis empressé d'en acheter un (et à le faire garder quelques semaines jusqu'à mon arrivée.....).

Donc, voici un des derniers modèles produits par S14, un Grumman E-2C Hawkeye 2000 (dernière évolution avant le E-2D) aux couleurs de l'escadron VAW-120 Greyhawks, un escadron de remplacement de l'US Navyé chargé de former les équipages du E-2 Hawkeye et du C-2A(R) Greyhound.

When I started preparing my trip to the 3 cities of Singapore, Taipei and Hong Kong, I noticed that in the latter city, Hawkeyes were sold by Toymax, a store that I knew well and so, I rushed to buy one (and to have him looked after for a few weeks until my arrival....).

So, here is one of the latest models produced by S14, a Grumman E-2C Hawkeye 2000 (last evolution before the E-2D) in the colors of the VAW-120 Greyhawks squadron, a Fleet Replacement Squadron of the US Navy responsible for training crews of the E-2 Hawkeye and the C-2A(R) Greyhound.

Encore un petit achat - Another small purchase

Juste après le Scale ModelWorld, le fabricant anglais 144th.co.uk a produit de nouvelles versions de son Blackburn Buccaneer (volets séparés pour configuration décollage, nouvelle verrière, nouvelles livrées dont celles de la première Guerre du Golfe...) mais surtout une des catapultes du pont du porte-avions Ark Royal, qui peut être utilisée soit avec un Buccaneer ou un Phantom FG.1.

Alors, n'écoutant que mon courage, j'ai acheté quelques bricoles....

Just after the Scale ModelWorld, the English manufacturer 144th.co.uk produced new versions of its Blackburn Buccaneer (separate flaps for take-off configuration, new canopy, new liveries including those of the first Gulf War...) but above all one of the catapults from the deck of the aircraft carrier Ark Royal, which can be used either with a Buccaneer or a Phantom FG.1.

So, listening only to my courage, I bought a few bits and pieces...

Oui, vous constatez que je suis volage....

Alors que ce blog pourrait laisser penser que mon seul amour est le 1/144, vous avez pu constater que j'ai une petite collection (juste moins d'une centaine...) de modèles en métal au 1/200....

Mais pas que....

A mes débuts, alors que je n'étais pas fixé, j'ai erré d'une échelle à l'autre, en particulier le 1/400....

Si vous avez vu mon dernier message sur le shopping en Asie, vous avez du voir que j'avais acheté un modèle au 1/400.

Mais promis ! c'est le dernier....

Les débuts de Cathay Pacific - The beginnings of Cathay Pacific

Il fut un temps où Cathay Pacific avait produit une série limitée de ses premiers avions et les plus emblématiques (dont un 707 et un 747) que les clients fréquents pouvaient se procurer à des conditions assez avantageuses.

Bien entendu, je m'étais sacrifié, juste pour rendre service à Cathay de son effort....

Mais, dans cette série limitée, je n'avais pas vu le Dc-6 jusqu'à ma visite chez un vendeur de Hong Kong il y a quelques jours.

Et donc, je me suis encore sacrifié....

There was a time when Cathay Pacific produced a limited series of its first and most iconic aircraft (including a 707 and a 747) that frequent customers could obtain at fairly advantageous conditions.

Of course, I had sacrificed myself, just to give Cathay a favor for her effort....

But, in this limited series, I had not seen the Dc-6 until my visit to a Hong Kong seller a few days ago.

And so, I sacrificed myself again....
