100 years and one day.
Artist Roy Cross died on April 24, 2024.
He was known as a technical illustrator during the 2nd World War, then as an advertising designer for the aeronautical industry, before becoming world-renowned as an illustrator of Airfix models during the 60s and 70s.
To understand the importance of Roy Cross, one only needs to compare the evolution of box arts at Airfix.
Ça, c'était avant Roy Cross.... - That was before Roy Cross....
Ça, c'était après Roy Cross, à l'époque où il ne fallait pas montrer de bombes, feux, fumées etc.... pour ne pas choquer les Bisounours....
On peut considérer ça comme joli, mais ça ne fait pas rêver..
That, was after Roy Cross, at the time when you shouldn't show bombs, fires, smoke, etc. so as not to shock the Care Bears....
It may be considered pretty, but it doesn't make you dream...
ET ÇA, c'était Roy Cross... - AND THAT, was Roy Cross...
But Roy Cross knew how to describe a possible adventure, without bombs, without machine gun fire, etc., with a simple drawing.....

Here is further proof of Roy Cross's art: bringing dreams, even with simple civilian planes (between oil fields or pyramids) and above all, making people want to buy these kits.....
Alors, merci Mr Cross, pour tous ces rêves, qui continuent encore chaque fois qu'on voit un de vos box arts.
Et pour ceux qui veulent en savoir plus, voici deux livres sur les illustrations de Roy Cross.
So, yes, in my youth (like that of many others) all these illustrations made people dream, made them buy kits, and the dream did not stop even when the result was not up to par....😄
So, thank you Mr Cross, for all these dreams, which still continue every time we see one of your box arts.
And for those who want to know more, here are two books on Roy Cross' illustrations.
