Les conditions météorologiques, obligeant à modifier la route initiale, une consommation supérieure aggravée par le poids du passager en trop, et une erreur de pilotage, ont finalement sauvé la vie des passagers qui ont pu se poser sur la côte espagnole, réservoirs vides, faute de quoi cela aurait été le "grand bain" dans l'Atlantique.
L'avion sera racheté par l'Etat français pour être conservé au Musée de l'Air du Bourget (MAE) où il est toujours.
