1/144 Sukhoi Su-33 "Flanker D" - by S14 Aviation Fighter Series

Just a few days before I left Japan, I finally found metal diecast at 1/144 in one of the many shops of Akihabara neighborhood in Tokyo.

I confess that I no longer believed in and I was ready to buy an umpteenth Aichi "Val" or Nakajima "Kate" from Avionix, because there were only available.

But, in one of the shops, like a hunting dog, I was attracted by a showcase in which were throned some aircraft models that seemed to be at 1/144, which was confirmed by indications of bulky boxes from an unknown brand.

It remained to ask (in Japanese...) : of metal or not ?
The answer : はい                (It means YES...)
At last !!! I had found something : metal models at 1/144 of a brand I did not know : S14 Aviation Fighter Series (see also website in the manufacturers links).

The first model presented is the Sukhoi Su-33 Flanker D, ie the naval version of the Sukhoi Su-27, which is easily distinguished with the latter by ducks plans.

But before introducing it some additional info : the model is supplied in a beautiful box ensuring good protection, with all the necessary information on its regimental affiliation, with a technical note, and all armament offered separately.

It is a very nice job and the model is really beautiful and very complete.

As you understood, I made a trip to Japan, "the country of 1/144".
But, in all the shops that I visited during my peregrinations, I found nothing to buy.
Yes, there are model kits, at all scales (it is the country of Hasegawa and others, including Tamiya which proudly displays at the Shizuoka railway station...)

There are many Tomytec at 1/144, which is fully painted kit, but it's still plastic, even if it is very well done.

But regarding diecast metal, blah....
It is true that I have quite a few things, but to find... nothing.
So, I thought compensate with train accessories, because the most common scale is 1/150.
But I have found nothing really convincing :
- a Toyota Land Cruiser of the brand Pro-Hobby,
- a set of commercial vehicles, with some really small, which are found everywhere in Japan in real life...

Finally, a few days before departure, I wondered if the 1/144 was not completely outdated.
Fortunately, I found something at the Ghibli Museum : a metal and photo-etched model kit of the real aircraft of Porco Rosso, the Savoia S.21 (and not the Macchi M.33 made in red by F-Toys - see the previous post).
I do not know if it's 1/144, because it is a fictitious aircraft, but it seems compatible if one refers to the size of the cockpit.

I also found, at the bottom of a shop, a small metal model, fully assembled and painted, at the 1/200 scale.

But that was only stopgap, show of a great disappointment.
Even the stewardess on the plane back, realized that, not only I was still a little boy, but I was also a bit disappointed because she offered me that.
It's plastic, but that consoles.....

A suivre.

I feel that you are touched by my story. But do not cry and be strong.
However, I found some stuff that I will present in the next post.
But it was hard.
To follow.

1/144 Mitsubishi Ka-14

No messages for a few days because I will try to see a real Zero and a real Ohka Baka, see the cherry blossoms (this is for my wife) and visit the Ghibli Museum (yes, the real, in Tokyo...).

About the Ghibli, do you know Hayao Miyazaki ?
No, it is not a pilot or an aircraft manufacturer.
He is the author of animated films (not just for children) include Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, etc. and My Neighbor Totoro.

Among its many creations, there is the Porco Rosso movie related to aviation of the 20s : The story of a former pilot of the first world war with a pig's head who fights against pirates in the Mediterranean at the time when the seaplane rules the seas.

The Porco Rosso plane is called S.21 in the movie, but it absolutely not resembles to the SIAI 21 (a biplane) but rather to the Macchi M.33 that F-Toys produced in PVC at 1/144 in a red livery called "Porco Rosso"...

But Miyazaki realized another animated film related to aviation : The Wind Rises.
The film is a fictionalized biography of the aerospace engineer Jiro Horikoshi, designer of Mitsubishi A5M "Claude" and A6M "Zero" hunters.

At the occasion of the release of this film, the Ghibli Studios (studios created by Miyazaki) produced a small airplane model, in metal, at 1/144, the ancestor of A5M "Claude", the Mitsubishi prototype Ka-14 created by Jiro Horikoshi.

The model is made of polished metal, very thin (and therefore fragile) and mounted on a base.

Then, according to a well established habit, when I find something, I buy it and if possible, in 2 copies.
This is the second that I have repainted and decorated to be the most in conformity with the real prototype.
